The mission of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is to discover and develop new knowledge and sustainable technologies that improves the practice of civil and environmental engineering in service to society. To educate future creators and innovators who will employ their grounding in science and engineering to become leaders in many spheres of society.

This lab research is directed towards applications that involve advancing fundamental science and transformative technologies at the nexus of climate – energy – environment for a sustainable energy and resource recovery future.

What You Will Do

This is a two-year term position with the possibility of renewal based on available funding and performance.

• Coordinate and support the training of postdoctoral research associates, MS and PhD students, undergraduate and high school students.
• Monitor weekly research progress of group members and coordinate the timely submission of deliverables to sponsors.
• Work closely with the group members to implement the community benefits plan as required by the sponsors.
• Develop standard operating procedures for key equipment and ensure timely communication of equipment that needs to be fixed.
• Maintain lab safety standards and ensure compliance with EH&S requirements.
• Support the collection of new data sets, timely presentation of key findings, and key reports or narratives that need to be written for sponsors.
• Work the assigned members for lab safety to maintain in-process inventory of chemical components and key materials and supplies necessary for research activities. This includes:
  • Periodic inventory of chemical components/blends.
  • Ordering, transferring, and delivering chemicals.
  • Responsible for developing, managing, and monitoring of all safety protocols and training of students.
• Safe handling of hazardous chemical wastes in compliance with environmental guidelines.
• Conduct quality control analysis and checks on the data sets, publications, and presentations generated in the lab.
• Demonstrate and train staff/students on the use of moderately complex equipment and laboratory techniques; explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operations limitations, and outcomes.
• Oversees key duties and responsibilities of the lab group members including timely completion of key project milestones.
• Maintains a clean, professional, and safe work environment.
• Support occasional teaching needs including guest lectures as needed.
• Complies with all safety and university policies and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

What We Need

• Bachelor’s degree and 3 to 5 years’ relevant work experience or equivalent combination. Experience in an academic teaching and research laboratory environment.
• Experience in providing hands-on instructions in the operations of environmental labs and CEE Shop equipment.
• Experience in environmental research wet lab setup and operations.
• Excellent communication skills with a desire to work with faculty, undergraduate and graduate students.
• Knowledge of software, including, but not limited to MS Word, Excel, and Adobe.
• Familiarity with Cornell safety requirements, EPA and OSHA regulations. Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and train colleagues as needed.

What We Prefer

• Progress towards an advanced degree (MS, PhD) in chemical and/or environmental engineering or chemistry, materials science is highly recommended.
• Previous experience working with chemicals.
• Ability to supervise the collection and analysis of complex data; may research, tabulate, graph and map complex data.
• Record of publications in high quality, peer-reviewed publications.
• Record of conference presentations in national and international conferences.
• Evidence of leadership in topics related to sustainability.
• Multiple years of experience working in environmental and chemical research labs with a strong knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and guidelines.
• Experience in the design and fabrication of research apparatus.
• Must have excellent multitasking skills.
• Desire to acquire new technical skills with environmental lab equipment.
• Strong software skill using MTS and LabView.
• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
• Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color.
