Currently announcing a vacancy for an Associate Director – Human & Civil Right, Equity & Governance.
JOB SUMMARY:
Individual holding this position report directly to the Manager of Human and Civil Rights, Equity and Governance. The purpose of this position is to develop, plan and implement a variety of activities that will support the work of the Office by providing support to members, staff and communities in the work of ensuring racial, social and economic justice while also maintaining the Governance procedures of the organization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide resources to various committees through working with the chairpersons to ensure that the charges and committee goals are being met.
- Coordinate preparations for various conferences.
- Collect and maintain data, policies, and research materials that will aid in preparing staff, governance leaders and members with the knowledge needed to confront issues in racial, social, and economic justice.
- Plan, develop materials and present engaging and effective workshops that will help participants in implementing practices that will develop, maintain or support their organizations to achieve equity.
- Assist with the Manager in the planning of the National Education Association Representative Assembly, Board of Directors, Resolutions, conferences and summits.
- Develop trainings, coordinate the recruitment, and maintain a schedule for trainers.
- Working with appropriate staff, to coordinate the recruitment, training and deployment of member trainers.
- Develop and coordinate efforts to further NJEA’s racial, social and economic justice state-wide initiatives to promote equity.
- Plan, coordinate and facilitate meetings of NJEA/NEA Governance committees.
- Plan, coordinate and facilitate responsibilities delegated to the Office necessary to conduct NJEA state-wide governance meetings.
- Assignments will also include one or more of the following:
- Respond to request for information concerning racial social and economic justice.
- Support members in implementing culturally responsive classrooms, fair discipline policies, and restorative practices.
- Develop trainings in best practices in organizing around racial equity, social justice, and professional practice.
- Monitor national trends and movements center around racial, social, and economic justice.
- Create for publication the official agendas and minutes of the Executive Committee and Delegate assembly.
- Maintain the official resolutions and policies of the NJEA.
- Work with NJEA committees and staff contacts as appropriate.
- Attend meetings of the NJEA Delegate Assembly, Executive Committee, and other NJEA groups, as necessary.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with NJEA affiliate leaders and members.
- Develop, facilitate, and participate in staff meetings and workshops when assigned.
- Write reports and other papers relating to the work of the Human and Civil Rights, Equity and Governance Division.
- Design, develop, and maintain an Information Technology system capable of supporting NJEA’s need for research and analysis in the areas of governance documents, restorative practice, curriculum, anti-racist teaching practice, innovation, diversity in the teacher workforce, teacher retention, and others.
- Collaborate with all NJEA committees when appropriate.
- Review governance documents to offer updates, improvements, and/or clarifications.
- Perform such other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- A bachelor's degree is preferred.
- A candidate should possess a high degree of intelligence and imagination, and excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to transfer complex ideas into simple, direct language and give close attention to detail, form, and substance.
- A candidate should possess a high degree of cultural competency.
- A candidate should be familiar with the operations of office computers, including proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word or equivalent.
- A candidate should also be familiar with the organization and operation of public schools as well as with the habits, attitudes, and personalities of public school employees and the activities of their representative organizations.
- Must be able to work long hours, drive to locations throughout New Jersey, and occasionally travel out-of-state, as needed.
- Organizing experience related to social, racial and/or economic justice issues is preferred.
- Knowledge of association governance practices, parliamentary procedure and experience conducting formal meetings are preferred.
COMPENSATION:
As per negotiated collective bargaining agreement.
