This position is responsible for providing oversight of the inspection and maintenance of state-owned bridges and box culverts. Duties may include, but not be limited to, hands-on inspection of bridges, determining and reporting structure data and condition ratings, identifying bridge repair and maintenance needs, performing bridge related project design work, and the inspection of newly built structures prior to final acceptance. There may be times when assistance of the maintenance crew is required.
From approximately May 1 to September 30, the anticipated work schedule for this position is 10-hour days, 4 days per week although hours may vary due to travel, meetings, inspections, and work load. Travel throughout the Aberdeen Region will be required frequently. Occasional in-state travel with overnight stays may be required.
Work assignments are frequently performed in an outdoor environment. Outdoor work involves working in all weather conditions and around traffic. This position will work at heights routinely.
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision, distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to focus.

The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Assistant Region Bridge Engineer $84,474.00 annually.
Licenses and Certifications:
Incumbent must have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) within one year of employment.
The incumbent must be able to obtain a Part 107 small UAS commercial pilot's license without restrictions within 180 days of hire date to retain employment.
Employee will be subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable-suspicion, post-accident, follow up, and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing.
According to SDCL 32-12A, applicants will be required to authorize the Department of Transportation to obtain a complete driving record. Applicants living outside of South Dakota may be asked to provide a motor vehicle record from their state of residence.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Only applicants with a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering will be considered.
The incumbent will be required to become an NBI Team Leader. Minimum qualifications to become a certified Team Leader, for the purposes of this position, include a bachelor's degree in engineering, passing the FE exam, two years of NBIS bridge inspection experience, and successful completion of an FHWA-approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course. Three or more years of transportation engineering experience.
Knowledge of:
- civil engineering principles of structural design, construction, and maintenance methods and practices.
