The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Post-Doctoral researcher. This position will be within NOAA’s Quantitative Observing System Assessment Program (QOSAP). In addition, the position will involve collaborations with scientists at the University of Maryland-College Park as well as at the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami and the Laboratory for Satellite Altimetry (LSA) of National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS)/the Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) branches of NOAA. This position is expected to be fully remote.
We seek a motivated researcher to join our group and participate in the development of observing system experiments (OSEs) in the North Atlantic of particular relevance to NESDIS, and observing system simulation experiment (OSSE) capabilities in general. QOSAP is conducting observing system design studies for tropical cyclone forecasting, marine heat wave, and other societally-relevant applications, particularly in regions that include coastal US waters.
The priority focus for this position is an OSE in the North Atlantic domain in application to rapidly intensifying or rapidly weakening tropical cyclones. The OSE will assimilate output from the NOAA Next-Generation Enterprise Ocean Heat Content (NGE OHC) algorithm using the ocean component of the Joint Effort for Data assimilation Integration (JEDI) framework. This project will test the fidelity of the NGE OHC algorithm used for the purpose of improving initial conditions of tropical cyclone forecasts. The incumbent will need to develop methods to estimate uncertainties in the outputs of the NGE OHC algorithm and run an ocean model with a data assimilation framework as well as prepare for future OSSEs using Nature Run output.
