General Responsibilities Howard Community College invites passionate sonography educators to join our team in preparing the next generation of sonographers. The Full-time Faculty member functions within the mission, philosophy, and procedures within the college's policies, alongside clinical coordinator duties as outlined by the program and the JRC-DMS. Full-time Faculty may teach a combination of didactic, lab, and clinical courses to meet their Full-Time Equivalent Hours.
This role, under the supervision of the Program Director, is responsible for scheduling, assessing, and arranging the clinical placements that provides the most optimal clinical experience for the students as well as serve the needs of the clinical affiliates. This faculty member will evaluate and ensure clinical education effectiveness through a schedule of regular visits to the clinical education centers throughout Maryland and surrounding states. The clinical coordinator is responsible for the guidance of the clinical instructors and students. The individual must be willing and able to travel nationally on a periodic basis for conferences and seminars.
Sonography faculty facilitate the learning of sonography students and empower them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to provide safe, cost-effective, and inter-professional care to clients, families, and communities. Faculty shall create dynamic learning environments to engender desired cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes; develop student's behavioral and socialization skills expected of sonography professionals; assess and evaluate student success; participate in curriculum design and program outcomes; function as a change agent and demonstrate excellence in sonography education and practice, and continuously pursue quality improvements as a health science educator.
Candidates must be passionate about sonography, education, and innovation and looking for a full-time career where they will make a difference in healthcare, education, and population health.
Budgeted faculty member, at any level and in any college division, is expected to teach 14-16 units per semester. Twelve-month faculty are expected to teach an additional 6-credits over winter and/or summer. Other teaching requirements and unit definitions can be found in the faculty handbook. In addition to teaching, faculty are expected to maintain at least 5 office hours per week.

- Provide opportunities outside of class for students to get assistance. (teaching/service)
- Enforce the college rules as published in the Student Handbook and Howard Community College Catalog.
- Facilitates interactive learning environments (teaching)
- Incorporates the teaching principles of Howard Community College into their teaching: evidence-based practice, problem-based learning, and interprofessional practice.
- Participates in annual trainings on best practices for teaching excellence (Breaking Developments) (teaching/scholarship)
- Uses data for continuous improvement (teaching/scholarship/service)
- Didactic, lab, clinical, and fieldwork curriculum align seamlessly (teaching)
- Evaluates students and provides documented feedback to students based on course outcomes (teaching)
- Promoting effective student learning through assignments and class activities including the use of a variety of instructional techniques designed to meet student needs, promoting active and independent learning, and promoting higher-order thinking.
- Holding classes at the scheduled time for the full period, except for emergency situations.
- Maintaining accurate attendance scholastic records and submitting required reports to meet deadlines, including submission of final grades by the published deadline.
- Teaching evening classes as part of regular load when assigned and at least once every two years within the needs of each division.
- Conducting assigned classes in accordance with the catalog and course description and objectives for the course.
- Developing methods of assessing student learning as specified in the objectives and providing feedback to students in a timely manner.
- Teaching students in the clinical environment and providing formative feedback using the clinical progress evaluation tool.
- Preparing, ordering, and updating normal classroom materials (including new textbooks) in accordance with established deadlines, including routine handouts, audiovisual equipment, library materials, bibliographies, reading lists, textbooks, software etc.
- Completing administrative duties in accordance with the administrative job description when assigned in lieu of a full teaching load.
- Attend and actively participate in meetings
- Serve as liaison for communication with clinical agencies
- Communicate with preceptors in the clinical setting
- Communicate with program directors the status of student learning experiences
- Maintain student records
- Promote health careers at HCC
- Distribute and summarize surveys
- Coordinate and evaluate all clinical education activities to ensure students meet the clinical requirements established by Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Program
- Orient students to the clinical portion of the DMS program.
- Instruct DMS program content as needed and instruct pre-clinical lab skills, as needed.
- Create and implement clinical procedures and policies.
- Modify any/all clinical policies and procedures to meet the needs of the students, clinical affiliates, and CAAHEP with the help of the program director
- Establish clinical training sites and maintain effective relationships with clinical training facility personnel.
- Train, coordinate, and supervise the clinical instructors.
- Supervise students while on clinical training and conduct assessment of clinical performance.
- Collect all necessary student documentation required for program completion.
- Meet routinely with the Program Director to identify and clarify clinical issues.
- Provide service to the program and the Diagnostic Imaging Department.
- Clearly communicating to students at the beginning of a course what they are to learn (course descriptions, syllabi, the grading system, and the learning objectives, attendance policy etc.).

Other Knowledge Required - Possess minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography or related field. Masters Degree preferred.
- Certified and in good standing as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer with the ARDMS (Abdomen, OB/GYN, Vascular, and/or Adult Echo). Dual credential preferred.
- Previous teaching experience in a medical sonography program preferred
- Possess minimum four years employment as a medical sonographer (minimum 2 years full-time employment).
- Recent clinical experience
- Multi-specialty certification is strongly preferred.
- Documented experience in supervision, instruction, evaluation, student guidance and in educational theories and techniques
