This is a Part-Time, Temporary Position

Internship Starting Date: May 13, 2024

Open Until Filled

The City of Avondale Attorney's Internship Program is an internship designed to expose law school students to a career in the legal field and local government. The goal of the program is to educate students on the many facets of the City Attorney's Office and its representation of local government. Law school students may apply to participate in a paid internship for the summer of 2024.

The paid program allows law school students to earn an hourly wage with a structured work schedule. A commitment of at least 8 weeks is required.

Essential Functions


Assists in drafting and reviewing City contracts, ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents relative to the administration of legal processes affecting the City.

Researches and analyzes law sources (i.e., ordinances, statutes, judicial decisions, legal articles) for a variety of legal issues.

Reviews case files and maintains and updates filing systems.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


Must be currently enrolled in a Juris Doctorate program at an accredited law school and has completed the first year of law school.

No direct local government experience is required for this position.

Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of hire.

Proficient in Westlaw and Microsoft products.

Supplemental Information


Work requires the ability to read various documents and memos from other departments and vendors, City Council communications, professional publications, requests for proposals, organizational policies and procedures, regulatory publications and legislation documents.

Work requires the ability to perform high school level math to include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages.

Work requires the ability to write documents, i.e., letters, memoranda, and other related legal documents.

Work requires considerable initiative and independent analytical and evaluating judgment.

Work involves choices of action within limits set by standard practices and procedures. Professional judgment is required to apply the proper course of action.

The incumbent in this position may be asked to contact others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City which may be involved in decision making or providing approval or decision-making authority. In addition, the incumbent may work with individuals outside the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations. Working with various state and federal agencies may also be required of the incumbent. Regular attendance based on an agreed upon work schedule at time of hire will be required. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. The incumbent in this role is entrusted with a variety of sensitive personnel and private information and is required to maintain and protect all confidential information acquired in the course of work.

No benefits are associated with this temporary position with the exception of Arizona State Retirement after meeting 20/20 rule.
