Job description

A generalist role that provides support to the Office of Career Exploration & Development in all capacities (i.e. career/major exploration, academic advising/course registration, professional development, employer relations, graduate school planning, etc.). Directly supports the Beeghly College of Liberal Arts, Social Sciences & Education (BCLASSE); Bitonte College of Health and Human Services (BCHHS); and Cliffe College of Creative Arts (CCCA).  This is a student-focused position, requiring most work time spent engaging students directly. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:  Conduct individual advising appointments related to major/career exploration, resume and cover letter development, internship/job search strategies, interview preparation, professionalism, graduate school planning, course registration, and any other relevant and appropriate topics.  



Deliver career-related presentations at class visits, club meetings, and other university sponsored programs. 



Plan and participate in special events such as networking events, job fairs, career panels, admission events, and orientations. 



Assist the Business Operations Specialist in the management of the career database, Handshake, including but not limited to running reports, approving employers/jobs, administering surveys, demonstrating the system to students, staff members and employers, and maintaining the on-campus student employment module. 



Assist with office projects including, but not limited to first destination reporting, departmental assessments, resume reviews/approvals, student outreach/communication, student employment, employer relations, community programming, and alumni engagement. 



Teach YSU 1500 and career development classes as needed. 



Occasionally supports other colleges and offices within the university.  



Stay abreast of industry changes, trends, and best practices, and may be required to attend professional development activities. 



Build rapport and work with department staff, faculty and other advisors to carry out various educational and career initiatives. 



Interacts with students face-to-face and virtually on occasion.    



Other Functions and Responsibilities:  Performs other related duties as assigned.



Equipment Operated:  Computer and all other standard office equipment.



Work Schedule:  On-Campus employment. Typically, M-T-W-Th-F 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. May require occasional evening and weekends.  



Supervision Exercised:  May exercise supervision over student employees. 



Reports to: Director, Career Exploration and Development 

Required Certifications, Training, and/or Licensures:  None



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Knowledge of: University policies and procedures*; office practices and procedures; department/division goals and objectives*; department/division policies and procedures*; workplace safety practices and procedures*; English grammar and spelling; records management; office management; project management.  



Skill in: Use of office equipment; typing, data entry; computer operation; use of computer software and other programs applicable to the assigned department/division*; interpersonal skills, public speaking, flexibility, active listening, positive attitude.  



Ability to: Collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; determine material and equipment needs; compile and prepare reports; use proper research methods to gather data; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; maintain records according to established procedures; effectively interact with personnel and public to answer routine questions; train or instruct others; move quickly and effectively from one tasks to another; work independently and in a team environment; develop and maintain effective working relationships; take direction and accept feedback.

Minimum Qualifications:  Bachelor's degree required and 1 year of college advising, college student support experience, staffing agency, or employment recruiting experience. Demonstrated experience in public speaking.  



Preferred Qualifications:  Master's degree; 2 or more years of applicable experience; experience using Handshake as a non-student user and familiarity with educational technology (Banner, Blackboard); experience administering and debriefing career assessments; experience delivering presentations and/or teaching classes; experience working with international students; certification and training in career development self-assessment tools.
