Peer Recovery Specialist

The Peer Recovery Specialist role is to support others in recovery who have a substance use disorder (SUD)and/or mental health disorder. The peer specialist will serve as a role model, mentor, advocate, and motivator to recovering individuals in order to help prevent relapse and promote long term recovery. Will demonstrate an ability to share personal recovery experiences and develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships. Peer will assist staff in identifying detox and/or treatment facilities if the patient is agreeable to entering treatment. Peer will respond to inquiries, from Mercy staff, state, and local community partners. Conducts presentations groups and to stakeholders. Participates on committees, multidisciplinary care teams, and provides intern/patient training on peer service delivery. Documents information as directed.

Meets with overdose survivors in the ED, before their release, but if unable, as soon as possible. Links/assists overdose survivors with treatment and recovery services. Provides education on overdose prevention and the use of Naloxone. Provides resources and assistance to overdose survivors and their family members. Maintains contact after ED discharge and/or discharge from New Start Treatment Center programs to provide necessary recovery support. Documents the individual’s progression of recovery or relapse along with a plan of care at each contact.

Assists the individual to articulate personal goals for recovery using face-to-face encounters and support groups. Identifies and creates goals with development of recovery plans with the skills, strengths, supports and resources to aid the individual in achieving their goals. Supports individuals in life choices which may include providing resources to assist with employment and maintaining safe and affordable housing.

Maintains project logs, reports, and records in designated files and databases. Completes daily log of activities and patient/client files.

Provides the client a vision-driven hope and encouragement for opportunities at varying levels of involvement in community based activities ( i.e.: work, school, relationships, physical activity, self-directed hobbies, etc.) Maintains contact by phone and/or email with recovering person after they leave the program at New Start to ensure their ongoing success and to provide re-engagement support in partnership with other agencies, as needed.

Requirements

Required Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED Specialty/Major: General

Preferred Education: Associate degree Specialty/Major: Health and Human Services

Required: Certified Peer Support Specialist through OHMAS and National Certified Peer Recovery Specialist within 6 months of employment

Preferred: Currently certified as a Peer Support Specialist through OHMAS, National Certified Peer Recovery Specialist, Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant licensure

Qualifications

Minimum Years and Type of Experience: Must be in recovery for 3-5 plus years. Experience in working in a substance use disorder/chemical dependency setting highly preferred.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Basic Computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook e-mail required. Basic Life Support Certification required within 30 days of hire.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: Knowledge of Motivational Interviewing techniques and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques.
