Job description
Summary
A Pathologists' Assistant is a highly trained mid-level practitioner in anatomic pathology who provides various services including the comprehensive macroscopic examination and evaluation of all surgical pathology specimens. Pathologists' Assistants are responsible for efficient and effective operation of the surgical pathology grossing suite. This may comprise writing and reviewing surgical pathology procedures, inventory control, and laboratory operations such as quality assurance, quality control, and accreditation inspection preparation.
Responsibilities
Perform and assist with the macroscopic description and dissection of all surgical specimens ranging from simple to complex cases including submission of tissue to use in microscopic analysis.
Obtain and review pertinent clinical information and history, including imaging studies and operative records.
Dictate and complete macroscopic descriptions on surgical tissues including information to assist the Pathologists in the microscopic evaluation and diagnosis of the tissue.
Provide independent technical leadership.
Consult with the Pathologists on unusual and complex cases, such as oncology cases where the tumor has spread into other organs, cancers that extend into surrounding structures, and initial intraoperative examination.
Assist the Pathologists in all the functions of Surgical Pathology as related to the macroscopic examination of tissue.
Perform various ancillary functions such as photography, specimen radiology, and frozen sections, training and supervisory functions as assigned
Prepare and maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, patient/customer safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
Ensure compliance with all laboratory accreditation agency requirements.
Ensure adequate inventory of supplies and maintenance of equipment in Anatomical Pathology as related to the gross examination of tissues.
Requirements, Preferences and Experience
Education
Preferred: Board Certified PA
Minimum: Bachelor's Degree in Allied Health plus Certification as PA or Graduate of Pathologists' Assistant Program and board eligible. or MD or Resident of Anatomical Pathology
Experience
Preferred: Two years' experience as PA preferred
Minimum: Healthcare/Medical - Pathology or Related Field
Licensure, Registration, Certification
Minimum: Pathologists' Assistant (PA, ASCP) or Board Eligible and certification within 2 years employment or MD or Resident of Anatomical Pathology
