Responsibilities: Working within the formal garden team under the direction of the Formal Gardens Conservatory Horticulturist II, to maintain assigned garden areas to high standards established by the Director of Horticulture with an emphasis on sustainability and aesthetics. Supporting the maintenance of conservatory collections using sustainable horticultural practices. Maintaining the collections and equipment in conservatory support spaces including Growing House, Pit House, Propagation House, Potting Shed, and storage and office spaces. This position also works outside maintaining garden spaces adjacent to the Conservatories, primarily the Court and Winter Garden. Works with the Conservatory Horticulturist II to follow a regular fertilization schedule of the Conservatory collections. Supporting the maintenance of garden infrastructure and reporting maintenance needs to the appropriate personnel. Performing horticultural tasks including but not limited to pruning, fertilizing, watering, pest, and disease scouting and control, repotting, and acclimatizing plants. Propagating plant material for seasonal displays and enhancement of the garden's living collection Supporting the seasonal relocation of containerized conservatory collections throughout the outdoor gardens in spring and back indoors in fall. This includes proper acclimatization and the creation of visually stunning and educational displays as directed by the Formal Gardens Manager Supports the aesthetic vision and inspiration for horticultural displays in assigned garden areas. Supports Conservatory Horticulturist II with exhibitions and special events as directed. Supporting snow removal operations; with training, safely operates snow throwers, salt spreaders, and other snow removal tools and equipment as directed. Comfortable working independently, and able to use appropriate judgement when working alone on the weekend. Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor. Schedule: The Conservatory Gardener position is non-exempt. The standard work schedule for this position is five days per week, Sundays through Thursdays, from 7:00 am - 3:30 pm with a half an hour for lunch . However, the schedule may be flexible to suit the organization's needs and involve evening hours around the Night Lights event in November and December. Work is performed indoors and outdoors, and the Conservatory Gardener will be asked to assist with the event in both roles. Education and Experience: A degree in horticulture, plant science, or closely related field or equivalent relevant experience Previous greenhouse/conservatory experience is preferred. Must have or be able to obtain a Massachusetts pesticide applicator (core) license. Must be able to effectively use standard office technology including telephones, computers, printers, copiers, and Microsoft Office software including Outlook, Word, and Teams. Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check. Valid driver's license. Physical Demands / Working Conditions: Must be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly and work outdoors in all seasonal Must be able to bend, squat, kneel, stand, and walk for extended periods of time and to navigate uneven grounds and stairs evenly. Must be able to comfortably and safely at heights on ladders and on lifts with training. Must be able to work with appropriate computer and communications equipment. Must be able to work with appropriate hand and power tools. Must have or be able to obtain within six months of the start of employment a Massachusetts pesticide applicator (core) license.
