Research Technician II, Psychiatry-Choi Laboratory
Job Summary
The Choi Laboratory in the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center is seeking a highly motivated full-time Research Technician to assist in studying ascending touch and pain pathways. The lab opened its door in July 2022 and is building a team to investigate the functional organization of ascending somatosensory circuitry that underlies our sense of touch.
Working under the direction of the Principal Investigator and as a team member of the lab, the successful candidate will utilize mouse genetic tools in conjunction with histological and behavioral approaches to understand the neurobiological mechanisms of touch and pain. This position provides an excellent opportunity to develop essential skill sets to further pursue careers in biological sciences and medicine, including various experimental techniques, data analysis, and scientific communications.
If you have a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, biology, chemistry, or related areas of science and engineering and prior experience working in a biology research lab, please apply.
· Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required. or
· Two (2) years college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment and two (2) years of laboratory experience at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent. or
· High school graduation or GED and four (4) years laboratory experience to include two (2) years at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.
· Utilize mouse genetic tools in conjunction with histological and behavioral approaches to understand the neurobiological mechanisms of touch and pain.
· Perform lab duties such as maintaining equipment and preparing common lab reagents.
· Perform mouse husbandry and genotyping.
· Assist in the design of experiments, procedures, and protocols.
· Perform experiments utilizing standard research techniques, including mouse behavioral assays, immunohistochemical analysis, and microscopy.
· Process, analyze and organize experimental data.
· Participate in lab meetings and journal clubs.
Performs routine scientific and medical research work in science area such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.
· Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.
· Records research data in accordance with prescribed procedures, discussing results with supervisor.
· Assists in collection of data for project reports.
· Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning implementation of new procedures.
· May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of laboratory personnel of lower grade engaged in limited phase of research project.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
