Overview:
The Steam & Power Plant I is the entry-level position into the Heating Plant Department. This department is essential to the operation, production, distribution, maintenance, and repair of NIU's Steam Power Plants (high pressure boilers), Chilled Water Plants, Hot Water Systems (mechanical, heating, and domestic), HVAC equipment, and Climate Control of all facilities. This position is the stepping stone to a career in this field, as this position receives training and experience in the operation of high pressure steam boilers to become a boiler operator (Steam & Power Plant II).
Position Summary:
Clean boilers, mechanical rooms and all related equipment such as pumps, supply fans, heating and AC equipment as well as assists in the repair of the above mentioned items.
The individual in this position must ensure that safe work practices and procedures are being followed at all times. Duties must be performed competently in routine as well as emergency situations as the Heating Plant is an essential service of the university. This individual can refer to guidelines and instructions provided by this department.
Flexibility in work shifts will be a requirement due to the 24/7/365 nature of this department's essential service to the University.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Steam Power Plant Maintenance & Repairs
- Assist in boiler room operations performing maintenance on high-pressure steam boilers. This would include routine maintenance on entire boiler structures and feed water treatment systems.
Facilities Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform preventative maintenance on various types of equipment (including HVAC equipment), which includes lubrication, cleaning of air handling systems, and the changing of air filters.
On The Job Training
- Receive training to prepare the individual for the duties of the Steam & Power Plant II and/or duties of the Steam & Power Plant III .
Preventative Observation
- Routine inspection and maintenance of campus infrastructure including all campus buildings, steam tunnels, and water mains.
Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
