The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association (WBA) awarded TJ Buchmann ’27 and Andrew Czysz ’27 a 3rd place finish for Best College Sports Play by Play (TV) during their 2023 Student Awards for Excellence on Feb. 24, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis.

TJ Buchmann ’27 (left) and Andrew Czysz ’27 (right) with their 2023 Student Awards for Excellence. Friends for over 13 years, TJ and Andrew are a dynamic duo on the Carthage esports team. The two freshmen, with the encouragement of Coach Robert Xiong, submitted their play-by-play of the NECC Week 5 Overwatch match as the Carthage Firebirds Red competed against Valparaiso University.

TJ and Andrew, or as their respective gamer tags identify them as “Blase” and “Turbidjuggler32,” were ecstatic to learn that their play-by-play earned them statewide recognition. Andrew accepted the award on their behalf at Lambeau Field, where he networked with professional broadcasters around the country, listened to various panels, and even sat in the Packers booth to call NFL highlights!
