Johnson County Community College Position, Department: Senior Tutor, American Sign Language Academic Affairs
Type of Position: Part-time Temporary, Non-Exempt
Work Schedule, Hours per week: Varies depending on department needs, 12 hours per week
Pay Range: $19.97-24.96 and determined based on relevant years of work experience.
Benefits Category: Partial benefits
Position Summary: Provide one on one instruction in ASL courses in the Language Resource Center. Assist walk-in students from all disciplines with interventions and strategies to learn effectively in all content areas. Other tasks will include individualizing instruction, diagnosing learning barriers, and constructing student learning plans. May also include directing students to needed campus resources and responding to online requests for class support, as well as rectifying software issues.
Required Qualifications: - A Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- At least 18 college credit hours in ASL, Deaf Studies, Linguistics of ASL, or related field
- Prior tutoring experience
- Native-like signer proficiency
- Good communication skills in both English and ASL, including patience and understanding
- Ability to explain ASL concepts in a one-to-one or small group setting
- Ability to learn and utilize effective tutoring techniques following best practices
- Ability to work independently but take direction as needed
- Must be able to help with computer programs
- Day-time availability during the week
Preferred Qualifications: - Master's degree or equivalent
- Experience with the Signing Naturally Curriculum

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to: TUTORING - Apply a variety of tutoring strategies in serving students at JCCC. Knows subject matter, course content and text
material for assigned classes and have general understanding of a variety of abilities and learning needs. Performance is
acceptable when: a. Tutor provides the additional assistance, guidance and stability that make a positive difference in the
learning success of students. b. Tutor encourages and assists students in their acquisition of academic goals and American Sign Language
success. c. Tutor demonstrates knowledge of language being tutored. d. Tutor maintains students' interest in
attending tutoring sessions. e. Tutor demonstrates ability to adapt learning strategies to students' learning needs. f. Tutor refers
students to other campus resources as necessary.
UTILIZE POSITIVE WORK ETHICS- Exhibit positive work ethics by being reliable and dedicated. Performance is acceptable
when tutor is able to a. report on time at the center and stays the whole time according to the schedule b. report absence in
advance if possible; if not, in a timely manner so that alternate arrangements can be made.
OUTREACH- Assist director in advertising LRC tutoring. Performance is acceptable when: a. Tutor performs class
presentations, as requested. b. Tutor responds to student inquiries about tutoring in a timely manner c. Tutor attends special sessions in
ASL and Deaf Studies classes, as invited by professor.
TRAINING - Participate in training and group meetings. Performance is acceptable when: a. Tutor attends and actively
participates regular meetings b. Tutor actively participates in training and contributes ideas to assist in the development of
providing better support to students. c. Tutor stays current in their target language.
ASSIST IN DAILY ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTER- Provide assistance in checking out materials, abide by the policies of the center,
& respect diversity among students and other tutors. Performance is acceptable when tutor is able to a. treat students with
respect and exhibit interest in helping them b. step in when need arises to check out models and books c. make sure that
students follow the policies of the center d. keep the center clean and organized.
ASSIST IN THE TRAINING AND MENTORING OF NEW TUTORS- Help new tutors learn the best practices in tutoring, the
available resource in the LRC and in the policies and procedures of the LRC. Performance is acceptable when tutor is able to a.
transition new tutors into consistent and effective independent tutors. b. provide guidance with the LRC operation and tutoring
techniques.
