About Harris County Flood Control District: The Flood Control District has the mission to reduce the risk of flooding in Harris County, the third most populated county in the United States, with a population in excess of 4.7 million, including the City of Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city. The Flood Control District has jurisdiction over the primary stormwater facilities in the county, which consist of approximately 1,500 channels totaling nearly 2,500 miles in length, as well as more than 60 regional stormwater detention basins, totaling more than 10,000 acres and several wetlands mitigation banks including Greens bayou.
Construction Management Intern Job Summary: The Harris County Flood Control District (District) is seeking qualified interns to join our Construction team. As an intern, under the direct supervision of an experienced project manager, you will assist in performing tasks that require the application of standard construction techniques and standards while acquiring basic technical project management skills. Assignments will be designed to develop judgment and understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
This 12-week paid internship program will provide candidates with an exciting opportunity to learn ‘real world’ experience and gain clarity on their ideal career path. Working with our organization will also offer the opportunity to contribute to various community development initiatives.
Essential Functions and Duties: - Review and learn from construction plans and specifications.
- Assist with tasks on construction projects that include assessing project requirements, implementing processes, and analyzing project performance.
- Assist in obtaining project data to establish engineering schedules.
- Review projects prior to completion of plans and specifications to provide constructability evaluation.
- Prepare correspondence, complete forms, and maintain records and files related to work activities.
- Gain knowledge of the inspection, testing, and payment requirements for all pay items in a contract.
- Learn the deliverables required to close out a contract and work directly with the contractor to obtain all deliverables.
- Gain knowledge of the permitting requirements for various construction tasks and verify that valid permits are held by the contractor for work being performed.
- Attend construction site meetings and project progress meetings to gain understanding of construction techniques and project milestones.
- Perform other duties that may be added or changed as the course and scope of the job directs.

- Must have completed at least 12 credit hours of coursework in project management, construction management, civil engineering, or a similar curriculum in good standing.
Licensure: - Valid Class "C" Texas Driver’s License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Excellent analytical skills in applying guidelines, policies, and precedents and in adapting standard methods to fit facts and conditions.
- Work independently with limited supervision, relative autonomy, and general review.
- Excellent organizational skills.

- Strong skills using Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
