Job description

The Position: Histologist position primary responsibilities are receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination by the pathologist. This may include cutting, sample capture, sample return, mounting and staining procedures. Responsibilities include all aspects of microtomy; ensuring compliance with state and national regulatory agencies; and interfacing with other departments including laboratory, Pre-Analytical and the pathologist. This position can be full time with a schedule: Tue-Sat, 12:00-8:30 pm. We are also open to part time or per diem within the same hours noted.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities (includes the following, other duties may be assigned) :


• This position requires you to produce the highest quality of microtomy, and H&E staining.


• Preparing microscopic slides on human tissue for research/diagnostic purposes, including embedding, microtomy, and mounting to include paraffin processed tissue.


• Processing specimen accessioning to include all manual and computerized data entry


• Performing routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist(s) according to established SOPs.


• Performing sample capture for submitting samples to Molecular.

Requirements/Qualifications:


Education & Experience


• Bachelor's or Associate's degree in science required


• Certification: HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) preferred


• 2 years of experience in high-complexity clinical laboratory testing, preferably in molecular diagnostics.


• Ability to confidently and rapidly cut and mount high quality tissue sections from a variety of tissue types, including needle biopsies.


• Maintains continuing education units required by California Department of Health Services.


• Experience with all major brands of histology equipment a plus.


Physical Requirements


• Repetitive movement of fingers, hands, arms and legs.


• Sitting, with occasional walking, standing, stooping, and moving about.


• Exposure to general laboratory environment conditions.


• Occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.

The anticipated compensation range for candidates who will work in the San Diego area is $28.00 to $38.00 per hour. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several objective factors that may include, but are not limited to, the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Base pay is one part of the Total Compensation and Benefits Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.
