AFT Missouri is seeking full-time Organizers/Member Representatives in St Louis, MO. The Local President and Executive Board supervise this position. Organizers/Member Representatives report to the AFT Missouri President. Organizer/Member Representatives perform several duties, including recruiting new members, identifying potential leaders and activists, organizing unionwide campaigns, organizing campaigns specific to assigned worksites, tracking data for assigned worksites, intake for problem-solving on campuses, assisting members through potential concerns or issues, and other duties as assigned by the local. Our Organizer strategizes with our President and Executive Board to plan organizing campaigns that engage members, potential members, and community members. Our organizers help develop strong worksite leaders by guiding and coaching members in organizing, problem-solving, communications, and member engagement.
Applicants should have a working knowledge of unions and a strong commitment to the labor movement, working knowledge of schools and issues surrounding teachers and support staff, strong computer skills, experience with Google suites and Google calendars, experience presenting in front of groups, the ability to adapt quickly, and multitasking skills. Organizing experience is important. This job requires irregular hours, some weekend work, and occasional travel.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Take direction from the President on daily and weekly activities to grow AFT Missouri’s membership
- Prepare members to successfully organize their coworkers and mobilize members
- Plan campaigns and develop actions in collaboration with members to promote member rights and fight for educational justice
- Handle individual and group problem-solving and grievance-related issues that arise at assigned worksites
- Make appointments for school visits and one-on-one visits
- Handle member issues/grievances, address worksite issues
- Attend daily or weekly meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and make plans
- Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a weekly and daily basis
- Ensure all union materials are distributed on all AFT MO campuses
- Assist with the overall union organizing program and growth of the locals
- Understand and discuss issues in a way that contributes to the momentum of a campaign
- Utilize numerous organizing tactics including home visiting, cold phone calls, worksite visits
- Have a fundamental commitment to building a diverse and democratic movement
- Be able to communicate effectively in writing, in speaking, and via electronic media
- Be able to work with databases, able to create basic flyers and other written material
- Lead and assist with training
- Ability to lift 20 pounds and transfer items to and from campuses and union office
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong commitment to the AFT MO organization
- Some knowledge of public sector unions in non-collective bargaining situations, understanding of labor unions, and social movement values is preferred
- Ability to calendar and schedule meetings and other tasks
- Computer literacy is required, some database experience is preferred.
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
- Ability to work irregular, often long, hours
- Ability to travel to appropriate worksites
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Excellent communication skills
- Have a professional demeanor
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred, but not required
- Experience in union organizing
- Experience and knowledge of the intricacies related to public education
COMPENSATION
- Competitive salary range based on qualifications to include stipends, range from $55,000 – $65,000.
- Retirement fund will be 8% of base pay starting after the first year of employment
- Health insurance package as governed and negotiated yearly by the Executive Board of AFT MO
- Vacation days -12days per year (5 unused days may be rolled over to next year)
- Sick/discretionary days -10 days per year. (5 unused days may be rolled over to next year)
- Bereavement leave for death of immediate family member
- Benefits will begin after a 90-day probationary period. (Qualification for health benefits to start on the first of the month from the date of employment)
AFT MO requires a two-week written notice if the employee chooses to resign. Failure to provide a two-week notice will result in a forfeiture of any accrued leave.
