Job description

Perform and interpret routine diagnostic procedures which require the exercise of independent judgement and responsibility in all areas of the laboratory.  Adhere to all technical and quality policies through the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing to ensure accuracy in test results. Supervise and review the work of technicians, lab assistants and trainees, as needed.
Duties and responsibilities
Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test result.

  1. Adhere to all laboratory safety and regulatory requirements.
  2. Carry out procedures associated with DNA & RNA for sequencing platforms, including DNA/RNA sample extraction, quantification & preparation, Illumina Infinium genotyping, library preparation, and sequencer operation.
  3. Perform quality control of initial samples and sequencing ready final library samples.
  4. Perform sample nucleic acid extractions.
  5. Track all work and issues in the appropriate databases and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  6. Become proficient in the LIMS tracking system to accurately perform day-to-day tasks.
  7. Maintain, troubleshoot, and perform day-to-day work on the Sequencing equipment (e.g., Illumina NovaSeq, T7, ONT).
  8. Perform proficiency testing as per regulatory requirements.
  9. Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures (see department SOPs).
  10. Evaluate test results to identify any problems that may arise and ensure accuracy of results before reporting values.
  11. Maintaining laboratory equipment and instrumentation for accurate reporting of results.
  12. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, and ensure QC performance is acceptable before releasing patient results.
  13. Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, correct the problems encountered, and escalate to the senior technologist or supervisor.
  14. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  15. Collaborate with other departments to investigate questions or complaints from customers, clients or patients.
  16. Maintain a neat and clean work environment within the department.
  17. Properly label reagents/test kits to include received dates, expiration dates, and if applicable opened dates. Ensure reagents/test kits are not used beyond their stated expiration dates.
  18. Assist with training of new employees in the department.
  19. Attend monthly department and any additional training/educational meetings.
  20. Participate in all applicable safety training sessions. Know the location and contents of the safety manual. Know the location/use of all applicable safety equipment.
  21. If needed, participate in government or regulatory agency inspections.
  22. Perform other duties as directed by management.
Qualifications

Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent, required. Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, or science related field preferred. Applicant must meet the minimum education and/or experience requirements to obtain a NY state Clinical Laboratory Technologist license.

License:
New York State licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, or provisional permit issued by the NYSED is required.

ASCP or AMT certification preferred.

Experience:
2-5 years of technical experience required.
