Departmental Overview

Department of Integrative Biology focuses on biological integration and diversity encompasses the full spectrum of biological organization (e.g., from molecular to biosphere) for organisms ranging from viruses to plants and animals. The faculty represent a wide range of expertise, including paleontology, population genetics, physiology, anatomy, human biology and health sciences and is a dynamic and diverse group of researchers in an interdisciplinary collaborative environment. IB shares rich connections with 4 natural history museums, and is a leading force in promoting field research and educational opportunities. We address problems relevant to human health and origins, the diversity of life, and biological interactions at all scales. Research integrates studies of natural history with genomics and phylogenetics.

HHMI labs are research facilities funded and operated by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which is one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the United States dedicated to supporting biomedical research. Position Summary at Moi Lab

Moi Exposito-Alonso Lab asks the broad question on how species may or may not evolve to global change, through combining global ecology models, with population genetics, and plant molecular genetics techniques using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system. The goal is to learn general principles of rapid evolution to climate to extrapolate with predictive models across species in the tree of life.

The lab is committed to providing a free intellectual atmosphere as well as close mentorship to its lab team members. Including weekly meetings and informal conversations; timely feedback on ideas, results, manuscripts, conference talks, etc.; investing in your training and career by providing scientific advice, collaboration networks, facilitating co-mentorships; and striving to be supportive, equitable, accessible, encouraging, and respectful.

The Moi Lab is affiliated to Berkeley's Center for Theoretical Evolutionary Genetics and the Innovative Genomics Institute. Lab members are encouraged to be active members of these engaging communities.

Finally, the Moi Lab has a large network of collaborators conducting globally distributed plant evolution experiments through the and others, which lab members will be connected with to broaden their network.

The trainee for this position would be supporting research on next generation sequencing, gene cloning, evaluation of mutants through phenotypic and microscopy techniques, rearing Arabidopsis thaliana plants for such experiments in laboratory and field conditions, and aiding in the required administrative and managerial tasks to achieve this research and ensure smooth laboratory operations. These include but are not limited to reagent preparation, ordering, equipment inventorying and purchasing, setting up protocols required to conduct research, and similar routine chores that are part of the work in the lab.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $58,490.82 (Step 1) - $71,291.74 (Step 11).
