Position Overview:
INTERNAL RECRUITMENT TO UC DAVIS ONLY. The Ray Rossi Endowed
Chair provides additional funding to a current UC Davis academic appointee in the
Associate Professor, Full Professor or CE Specialist title. The additional funding may support the endowed chair holder in areas of teaching, research, or extension
activities directly related to the purpose of the endowment.


RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION
Ray Rossi Endowed Chair in Viticulture and Enology

The appointees will conduct research and teaching pertinent to the California grape and wine industries. The appointment is for five years and renewable for another five years. The individual must be at the level of associate or full Professor or Specialist in Cooperative Extension in the Department of Viticulture and Enology. These chairs carry endowment income funding for research and related activities pertinent to viticulture and enology.

The Ray Rossi Chair will support research pertinent to the California grape and wine industries. This chair carries endowment income funding for research and related activities pertinent to viticulture and enology. The holder of the Ray Rossi Endowed Chair in Viticulture and Enology and will be senior faculty members in the Department of Viticulture and Enology (a primary appointment with a minimum of a 51% appointment in the Department) whose specialty is in the area of viticulture and/or enology and whose distinguished scholarship is nationally recognized. The initial term of the Ray Rossi Endowed Chair is for five years, with the option of reappointment for an additional five year terms per regularly established University procedures for endowed chair/professorship appointments (APM 191, UCD 191). It is expected that the holders of the endowed chairs will advance at least normally through the faculty ranks on the basis of his/her scholarly activities, teaching, University and public service. The endowed chairs will be selected based on a track record of excellent research and a vision for innovation in viticulture and/or enology.

The chairs will be expected to engage in teaching and scholarly activities focused in the area of viticulture and/or enology. This is accomplished through activities in the following areas:
Applicants must be tenured members of the University of California, Davis, Department of Viticulture and Enology at the level of Associate or Full Professor or Specialist in Cooperative Extension at the time of application. They must possess a Ph.D. degree and be able to provide documented evidence of strong research ability and innovative approaches to scientific inquiry. They must have demonstrated ability and willingness to conduct an internationally recognized program of scholarly research pertinent to the California grape and wine industries as well as demonstrated ability to teach effectively at both graduate and undergraduate levels.

As per agreement with the estate: Rossi funds will not be used to support genetic modifications toward development of a commercial genetically-modified product. Genetic modifications when used as a laboratory tool can be valuable for understanding gene function and regulation, providing insight that can be used in traditional breeding programs and in improved vineyard and winemaking practices. Therefore, Rossi funds may be used to support such use of these modern scientific tools in the laboratory.
