Job description

FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE

The purpose of this position is to organize and implement an instructional program for students in a dual language classroom setting while meeting the duties of teaching as outlined in laws and policies. Dual language classroom teachers deliver instruction in English and the target language.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Designs the academic (basic) education program so that it is consistent with the total educational philosophy of the district.

• Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning.

• Prepares educational plans for each group of students based on individually assessed needs in accordance with the district's philosophy, goals, and objectives.

• Uses appropriate assessment instruments pertinent to instructional areas to assess student progress. Evaluates student progress on a regular basis and provides feedback to students and parents.

• Supplies progress reports to school personnel and to parents of students as necessary and requested. Completing appropriate reports for local, state, federal and educational agencies.

• Refers those students who require further evaluation or follow-up services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies.

• Provides varied instructional techniques and media through individual and/or group sessions designed to meet the educational, social, and emotional needs of the students.

• Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials in target language.

• Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and School Board Policies.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Understanding of typical language development.

• Conversational and educational skills in English and target language.

• Ability to address grade level curriculum at the student's language level.

• Ability to perform consistent and detailed data collection for progress monitoring towards IEP goals in the areas of language development, audition, self-advocacy, and academic achievement.

• Ability to work collaboratively with school staff to meet each student's general education and special education needs and targets.

• Ability to train and work with support staff (language facilitators, teaching assistants) to establish schedules, routines, and to ensure adherence to district and state guidelines as well as individual student IEPS.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• Minimum: Bachelor's Degree and verified ability to deliver instruction in English and target language. Target language fluency will be verified through one of the following methods:
a) ACTFL composite rating of Advanced High or above
b) Target Language Praxis II scores of Advanced High or above
c) Graduation from a post-secondary instruction where the majority of instruction was in target language (Ex. Candidate has a B.A. from the University of Madrid, Spain).
d) Oral and Written target language evaluation with WS/FCS World Language or English Learner office
• Desirable: One year teaching experience.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
• Valid North Carolina Teaching License
