The Aerospace Reliability, Maintainability, & Safety Engineer provides analytical reliability modeling capabilities to the systems engineering team by leading component and system level trade studies and working with the systems engineers to develop a system architecture to meet customer reliability, maintainability, and safety requirements. In cooperation with the Program Management team, the Aerospace Reliability, Maintainability, & Safety leads and executes RMS efforts to ensure the TMS architecture, components, and design meet the program RMS requirements. This role is responsible for RMS requirements compliance assessment, generating reliability predictions from handbook methods and verifying with test data, and planning and performing HALT testing, endurance testing, and bottoms up reliability analytical methods, interpreting and analyzing test data from the lab for HALT and endurance and field data. During the program, the Aerospace Reliability, Maintainability, & Safety Engineer will work with a multi-disciplinary project team of subject matter experts in fields such as such as thermal/aerospace analysis, installation, mechanical design and analysis, reliability, controls, electronics and software, and testing.

Expected Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities

• Assisting the System Engineer and working with the lead RMS engineer in developing the program's system architecture and technical approach. This can include recommendations in meeting system level Reliability, Maintainability, and Safety (RMS) requirements development and verification and validation.
• Identify and manage program's technical risks as it pertains to RMS.
• Work with the RMS lead to provide clear objectives that are measurable and attainable, and coordinate RMS modeling and analysis activities with other engineering functional groups.
• Work closely with the Systems Engineer and Program Manager to ensure successful execution of RMS activities to support and be compliant with program requirements.
• Manage RMS requirements and assist the program Systems Engineer in their requirements traceability, decomposition, derivation, and verification & validation.
• Allocate and decompose high-level RMS requirements into lower-level specifications to internal functional groups, components, and suppliers as applicable for RMS requirements.
• Researching and recommending investments or changes in technology, methodology, toolsets, procedures, equipment, systems, etc. to continually improve the discipline health and the Intergalactic's products and services.
• Communicate and collaborate with customers and suppliers as part of design development process.
• Review and approve documentation for transition from prototype to production.
• Provide engineering support to trouble shoot and diagnose non-performing products (RCCA, lessons learned, etc.).
• Implementing and executing Design for Reliability process.
• Developing Reliability Allocations and Predictions (hardware and software), Maintainability Allocations and Predictions, Failure Modes, Effects & Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Testability Analysis, Failure Reporting Analysis and Corrective Action System (FRACAS), Maintainability/Built-In Test (M/BIT) Demonstration
• Work with systems engineers to generate Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), Fault Trees, and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
• Generate Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), Mean Time Between Unscheduled Removal (MTBUR), and Dispatch Reliability for new, (Modified Off the Shelf) MOTS, or OTS (Off the Shelf) components for new applications/platforms using analytical methods and fleet data from previous programs.
• Working with industry standards and handbooks such as MIL-HDBK-217F (Reliability Predictions for Electronic Equipment), 217Plus, MIL-HDBK-470A (Designing and Developing Maintainable Products and Systems), MIL-HDBK-338B (Electronic Reliability Design Handbook), MIL-HDBK-454B (General Guidelines for Electronic Equipment), MIL-HDBK-781A (Reliability Test Methods), MIL-HDBK-2155 (FRACAS), MIL-HDBK-2165 (Testability Handbook), Software reliability per IEEE 1633-2016
• Supporting Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), Condition-Based Maintenance Plus (CBM+), and Integrated Health Management System (IHMS) programs
• Familiarity with industry known reliability and maintainability tools/software such as Reliasoft, Windchill, or Express to perform analyses
• Planning and executing Reliability testing, e.g., Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT), Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS), reliability growth testing (RGT), and Endurance Testing
• Pursuit capture phase of a program by developing proposal language and determining appropriate BOE (basis of estimates) for bids and proposals
• Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact and build trust with team members from many different backgrounds, including engineering management, engineering teams, program management, business development, support groups, and subcontractors

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Working knowledge of key aerospace technical disciplines including requirements management, technical verification and validation methodologies, mechanical design, materials, RMS modeling/documentation, structural analysis, electrical systems, system controls, embedded controls, development testing and analysis, qualification analysis and testing.
• Experience in Reliability, Maintainability, and Safety analysis, predictions, and verification and validation.
• Experience in generating MTBF, MBTUF, and dispatch reliability predictions for various programs from bottoms up approach and from fleet data.
• Excellent interpersonal relationship building both internally and externally.
• Familiarity of aerospace requirements management methodologies and processes - traceability, decomposition, derivation verification, and validation.
• Functional understanding of major aircraft systems: environmental control systems, powerplant, electrical, hydraulics, controls, avionics, power generation, and structures.
• Experience with Vapor Cycle Systems (VCS), Liquid Cooling Systems (LCS) and/or Air Cycle Systems (ACS)
• Working knowledge of the physics of standard components in VCS, LCS, and ACS such as heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, turbines, fans, valves, motor and motor controllers, water collectors/separators, etc.
• Familiarity with environmental testing and qualification methods such as MIL-STD-810 and DO-160
• Basic CAD experience (preferably in SolidWorks).
• Expertise in using HALT and endurance testing to support RMS modeling.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Expected Hours of Work

Schedule may vary during the hours of Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. Some flexibility in schedule is allowed with prior approval, but dependability and punctuality are paramount. Salaried crew members are generally expected to work a baseline of 40 hours per week, although a priority is placed on achieving results rather than tracking time.

Supervisory Responsibility

The Aerospace Reliability, Maintainability, & Safety Engineer has indirect supervisory responsibility for crew members in their programs.

Physical Requirements

This role requires sitting, walking, or standing for several hours at a time.

Work Environment

This job operates in an indoor office environment and routinely interacts with other crew members and customers. This role routinely uses both paper and electronic record keeping systems and communication equipment.

Travel Requirements

Travel up to 20% may be required for this position.

Required Experience and Education

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Level of hire commensurate with experience and knowledge in aerospace engineering, designing, analyzing, testing, integrating, qualifying, and fielding products.

Additional Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
