Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Technology Solutions Engineer at UL Research Institutes based in our Evanston, IL office.

The Technology Solutions Engineer works with the UL Research Lab teams to solution technology platforms and applications that supports research initiatives for UL Research Institutes (ULRI) The Technology Solutions Engineer works closely with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and manage robust technology platforms and systems that are reliable and scalable to support ULRI research operations.

As the Technology Platform Engineer you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL   as you:

• Solution, design, develop, integrate and maintain technology platforms and systems to support research projects, ensure the scalability, reliability, and security of technology platforms.
• Identify, solution and implement technology tools to streamline research technology requirements in consultation with researchers and coordination with Shared Services IT.
• Develop data pipelines and integration solutions to facilitate the collection, storage, and analysis of research data, work with cross-functional teams to ensure data security, privacy, and compliance with relevant regulations.
• Stay current with emerging technologies and assess their potential impact on research initiatives and make recommendations for the adoption of new technologies that enhance research capabilities.
• Solution and provide and work in collaboration with IT Security Team to maintain security best practices to safeguard research data and technology platforms, ensure compliance with relevant data protection and privacy regulations.
• Assist in the resolution of technical issues and provide solutions support to ULRI research teams.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including researchers, data scientists, and IT professionals to ensure that technology platforms align with the overall ULRI Mission.
• Document platform configurations, processes, and best practices.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Professional Competencies

• Strong knowledge and proficiency with a wide range of technologies, including operating systems (e.g., Linux, Windows), cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), virtualization (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V), containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), and network infrastructure.
• Familiarity with data management and integration technologies.
• Excellent problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues efficiently and effectively.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, such as developers, system administrators, and security experts.
• Basic project management skills to plan and execute infrastructure projects, including resource allocation and timelines.
• Adaptability and willingness to learn new technologies and best practices.
• Customer-centric mindset to understand and meet the needs of internal or external stakeholders who rely on the technology platform.
• Commitment to continuous improvement and a proactive approach to optimizing technology platforms and processes.

Experience and Education Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
• Minimum 4 years of experience in designing, building, and maintaining technology platforms and infrastructure.
