Overview:
The Calvary Baptist Church of New Haven (CBCNH) is a predominantly Chinese/Asian-American congregation, affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA. We are made up of Chinese and English ministries, and altogether, we are a loving and vibrant community of worship, where our greatest priority is to know Christ and to make him known. Located in the heart of New Haven and next to Yale, many of our members are connected to the university or live in the neighboring towns.
We are seeking a full-time pastor to oversee and shepherd our church, particularly the English ministry. The pastor will work with pastoral staff, as well as other lay-leaders, to promote a life of intergenerational worship and communal flourishing; train robust and committed disciples; cultivate leaders by recognizing their gifts and talents; and incorporate them into the life of our church by way of service, worship, and fellowship. In light of our context, as noted above, the pastor should have some familiarity with, as well as a sensitivity for, the minority/immigrant experience. An ideal candidate will be one who truly has the passion to cultivate and grow our church and will thrive at the opportunity to help shape our ministry in New Haven, both independently and in collaboration with members and other churches.
Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Preaching – Preach regularly for Sunday service
Sunday School – Teach engaging courses for Sunday school(s) that promote a greater understanding of Christ and a love for his word
Counseling – Provide one-on-one counseling and spiritual direction.
Discipleship – Raise up leaders for ecclesial service; disciple members for effective Christian witness
Prayer – Daily intercede on behalf of the church, its ministries and its members
Theological Culture – Foster a culture of theological awareness (i.e. of what God is doing in Christ through the community he has formed for himself), by helping members embody Christ in all their forms of life together through faith, love, and mutual service
Experiences, Expectations and Qualifications:
Prior experience in cross-cultural ministry is preferred
Models good leadership skills (for oneself and others) via spiritual maturity, self-awareness, humility, integrity, courage, and creativity
Cherishes personal growth and spiritual development through prayer, scripture devotion, and continual learning
Proactive communication habits; excellent verbal and written communication skills
Passion for Christ and his church; able to work well with members and to thrive within a diverse, multicultural environment
Genuine calling and long-term commitment to serve the church in New Haven
Master of Divinity or Theology (or its equivalent) is required

Depending on candidate’s experience and training, Calvary is prepared to offer fair yet competitive compensation
