Departmental Overview
University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) helps build Berkeley's excellence through communications, public outreach, and fundraising to raise public awareness about Berkeley and increase private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus's philanthropic advancement strategies and strengthens campus unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. It handles a range of central activities and services encompassing prospect development, communications, donor stewardship, gift management, data management, and more.
The Student Experience & Diversity (SED) Philanthropy program, situated within UDAR, builds innovative philanthropic partnerships to ensure that belonging, discovery, and financial access are integral to every Berkeley student's education. The SED program primarily raises major gifts in support of student aid, co-curricular activities, and equity and inclusion. The team interfaces with a broad range of divisions and academic units on campus, and serves as the primary fundraising entity for the divisions of Equity & Inclusion, Student Affairs and Undergraduate Education.
Position Overview The
Associate Director of Strategic Advancement & Stewardship, Student Experience & Diversity (SED) is a Northern California based position with the ability to travel to campus as needed. We are seeking a self-driven leader with a high degree of knowledge in the field of major gift fundraising. Using advanced fundraising concepts, this position plans, organizes, and guides complex large-scale major gift fundraising campaigns in close partnership with the Executive Director, Deputy Director and campus leadership.
Reporting directly to the Executive Director,SED, this position includes leadership of a high-level and comprehensive stewardship program, creation of custom materials important to advancing donor giving relationships. This position will also manage the Assistant Director of Strategic Advancement & Stewardship, SED. Attends functions, meetings and serves on internal/external committees as a representative. Serves as a key representative of the SED team working with UDAR and campus fundraisers to facilitate donor strategies and outcomes for top student experience prospects. This position is expected to result in raising $50M+ annually for student success programs and activities, through partnership on SED's overall prospects portfolios.
Responsibilities
PROSPECT ADVANCEMENT - As an integral member of the Student Experience & Diversity team, lead key analytic, project management, and strategic writing for SED campus-wide fundraising initiatives by leveraging advanced fundraising concepts and best practices towards meeting the annual team fundraising goal of $50M+.
- Facilitate the donor solicitation process by creating and implementing custom fundraising materials important to advancing donor giving relationships, including proposals and briefings for the Chancellor, Vice Chancellors for Equity Inclusion and Student Affairs and the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education, and other senior campus leaders. Shepherds the fundraising process by creating donor solicitation and fundraising correspondence on behalf of senior leadership; stewardship reports and materials; presentations; and other documents.
- Analyzes and synthesizes knowledge on donors and campus priorities, attending closely to donors' giving interests.
- Conducts informal prospect research to aid in the summarizing and preparation of background information.
- Produces accurate summary analysis of donor giving histories with attentiveness to how donors view the story of their own philanthropy. Serves as liaison to UDAR Marketing and Communications to support the development of specific donor proposals, stewardship materials, and additional fundraising materials as needed.
- Will interact with donors in person, by phone and/or written communication to move them along the fundraising and giving continuum. STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM LEADERSHIP
- Provides strategic partnership to Student Experience & Diversity Executive Director and Deputy Director in leading advanced stewardship practices.
- Oversees the fundraising proposal development and stewardship strategy for SED prospects and donors. Ensures all responsible parties are well informed and equipped to meet strategic objectives.
- Lead and design the production of comprehensive SED's annual stewardship program, and the creation of individual stewardship plans by coordinating reporting; donor stewardship events; correspondence; other engagements.
- In partnership with SED's Associate Director of Operations, serves as liaison to UDAR's External Relations & Marketing and Communications team to support development of stewardship materials and program reports. Serves as a liaison, connecting SED with other UDAR partners that may include Principal Gifts and Strategic Initiatives, Major Gifts, Office of Gift Planning, Donor Recognition, Fund Stewardship and Compliance, and Prospect Development on donor stewardship strategies.
- Manages the annual stewardship program from a donor-centric perspective by tracking donors and working closely with SED team and UDAR partners.
- Manages data in the centralized database and in digital files to ensure accurate and complete records for effective donor solicitation and acknowledgements.
- Provides thought-partnership with SED primary managers to collaborate on meaningful stewardship touchpoints to optimize donor relations and stewardship.
- Assists primary managers and campus colleagues with, and often coordinates communications directly to donors. Advises on timing, tone and intent of campus leadership engagement of donors in collaboration with SED fundraisers, campus primary managers and other campus partners. MANAGEMENT & TEAM LEADERSHIP
- Oversees the work of the Assistant Director of Strategic Advancement & Stewardship, SED. Provides holistic support of the Executive Director and Deputy Director of SED with a specialized focus on prioritizing fundraising via donor solicitation and stewardship workflow and advancing SED fundraising initiatives and priorities.
- Works closely with the SED Development Coordinator in collaboration with the Associate Director Operations to ensure the calendared program plan aligns with optimum fundraising productivity and that the Executive Director and Deputy Director are prepared for upcoming donor/prospect commitments.
- Works with Executive Director and Deputy Director to prepare for and debrief fundraising strategy meetings and provides strategic guidance on fundraising priorities in collaboration with SED's Prospect Analyst.
- Prepares SED top prospect/donor activity overview for review at monthly fundraising review meeting; SED team meeting; strategy meetings, and prospect development partner meetings. Prepares for and participates in regular meetings with Donor Recognition, Fund Stewardship & Compliance, and with primary managers regarding strategy.
- Provides writing support for internal and external audiences. REPORTING & PROJECT MANAGEMENT
- Provides project and team leadership by creating team fundraising overview reports for divisional leadership and synthesizes data for developing future fundraising projects.
- Meets regularly with Executive Director, Deputy Director and Associate Director, Strategics Operations to ensure successful coordination of team work flows and project management. Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years experience using advanced analytical and critical thinking skills, demonstrating the ability to think about fundraising and donor engagement at a strategic and high level.
- Minimum 2 years experience applying expert working knowledge and understanding of fundraising and donor relations concepts, principles, techniques, procedures and practices.
- Excellent writing and research skills, including ability to make complex information clear and accessible for multiple audiences and shape it for specific purposes; logical and readable organization; proficiency with grammar, style, syntax, and punctuation.
- Ability to thrive in a complex and dynamic environment, managing conflicting priorities and coordinating multiple tasks.
- Strong commitment and ability to contribute to a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace and team culture.
- Ability and flexibility to act as a member of a cross-functional team and with multiple team and/or campus partners.

Education/Training
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience or training
Preferred Qualifications
- 1-3 years of supervision experience.
- Expert working knowledge of the Berkeley campus, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $110,000 - $130,000, commensurate with experience.
- This is an exempt, monthly paid position, eligible for full UC benefits.
- This is a hybrid position, eligible for 70-85% remote capability - this role will be expected to attend some in-person meetings on campus, including SED team meetings, divisional town halls/gatherings, etc. This is a Bay Area/Northern CA-based position.
