HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to perform laboratory procedures to assist supervisors with various testing, assays, and experiments. Provides support in various areas
of a laboratory as needed. Complies with laboratory quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) plans and procedures.

The Department of Anatomy Physiology and Genetics at the Uniformed Services University seeks a Research Assistant to support molecular studies of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The Research Assistant will be trained and supported to generate preclinical models of TBI and to provide state-of-the-art molecular biology support for next-generation sequencing applications including single cell/nuclei and ribonucleic acid isolation, sequencing, library preparation, quantitative assays for quality control, and operation of next generation sequencing platforms. The Reseach Assistant will have opportunities to learn state-of- the-art transcriptomic methods and to gain relevant expertise for postgraduate education and/or career advancement in the biomedical sciences.

• Isolates and makes quality control assessments for ribonucleic acid from a single cell/nuclei and brain tissue section samples.
• Independently generates diverse types of sequencing libraries.
• Contributes to operation of state-of the-art next generation sequencing instruments.
• Provides general molecular biology support as required.
• Provides surgical support for pre-clinical models of TBI.
• Makes detailed observations about project performance tasks; provides data analysis and interpretation.
• Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks.
• May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor .

Work Environment  

• This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's Degree
• Minimum of 0-2 years experience required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Technical knowledge of scientific disciplines.
• Knowledge of and skill in tissue culture technique and handling biological hazards
  and their safe use and disposal.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check 

Physical Capabilities

• Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
