JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Performs a variety of administrative duties, coordinating and directing services for victims of violent crime. A significant aspect of the work involves professional contact with adult and child victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and homicide, as well as professional contact with law enforcement staff and community groups/agencies.

Works under the general supervision of the Detective Supervisors.

Acts as a liaison between victims of violent crime and law enforcement professionals, prosecutorial staff, community resources and other legal services.

Maintains an accurate list of resources available to crime victims. Provides referrals for emergency financial assistance, counseling, housing and other social service needs for victims, as appropriate.

Assists victims in evaluating their level of personal safety. Addresses concerns the victim(s) may have regarding their safety and that of their family throughout the criminal justice process.

Provides emotional support for victims and/or the victim's lawful representative throughout the criminal justice process. Provides information to assist victims in understanding the various steps a case will take as it progresses through the criminal justice system.

Informs victims and/or the victim's lawful representative of charges filed against the defendant and the defendant's incarceration status.

Provides support and preparation for victims and witnesses during interviews and court proceedings.

Provides referrals to the New Mexico Crime Victims Reparation Commission (CVRC) for assistance with compensable expenses and assistance in completing and submitting the CVRC application.

Provides victims with information pertaining to their rights under the Victims of Crime Act, 31-26-4 NMSA.

Maintains statistical reports on violent crime calls received by law enforcement personnel. Processes appropriate forms and documents related to domestic violence arrests. sexual assaults, stalking and other related crimes.

Coordinates and conducts public speaking presentations for community groups, private organizations and City staff. Conducts and coordinates training for law enforcement professionals in the areas of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.

Establishes and maintains working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

Works closely with various agencies and committees.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy which includes: pre employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, social services or a related field; or four years of experience in a victim assistance program or law enforcement field or judicial field; or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.

All applicants must provide enough information for a thorough background check.

Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for past three years .

Working knowledge of the adult and juvenile criminal justice system.

Good knowledge of victimology and crisis intervention techniques.

Ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written form.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing; working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures

Ability to maintain extreme confidentiality concerning all affairs of the Police Department, City and other sensitive information obtained or received.

Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

Ability to meet deadlines.

Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Motor vehicle, telephone, personal computer, laptop, including word processing and spreadsheet software, copy,scanning and fax machines.
