As the second-in-command to the Library Director, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our library to impact our staff and the surrounding community. You will assist in leading a team of passionate professionals in Adult Services, oversee day-to-day operations, and contribute to the strategic direction of the library, as a forward thinker who is supportive and empowering.

Position Summary:
This position reports to, and works closely with, the Library Director in overseeing the operations of the library. This is an ideal position and opportunity for someone with previous success in a supervisory position or an experienced librarian in the public library space. The Assistant Library Director will have direct oversight of Adult Services and IT staff and ensure that exceptional customer service is provided to all patrons.
The Assistant Library Director will present the library to the community in a meaningful and enriching manner that will enhance the patron experience and increase visits and usage.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
- Manages both the Adult Services team and IT Staff to include hiring, training, scheduling, assigning tasks, motivating, evaluating, and development
- Supervises and provides leadership for day-to-day operations of the library
- Develops, plans, promotes and participates in programs and events
- Gathers and maintains information/data to support periodic and special reports documenting activities for area of responsibility
- Writes and implements program grants
- Provides effective communication on procedures and processes to staff and public
- Assists with the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and processes
- Responds to and resolve patron issues, including account questions and policy enforcement
- Maintains an attractive, organized and well-used library, including creating displays, shelving order, providing thoughtful programs and events, and feedback to the Director on the needs of the community
- Know, understand and administer the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library; in addition to these freedoms, support client discretion of materials available at your local library(ies).
- Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records
- Provides back up to the Library Director as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements
An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.
- ALA-accredited Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science degree strongly preferred, an equivalent combination of education, experience, skills and training may be considered with Master’s equivalent
- Minimum of (5) five years of public library experience required
- At least three years of successful public library management/supervisory experience required
- Experience tracking usage statistics, data collection and excel reports
- Ability to build strong staff teams and develop, champion and mentor staff
- Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills, along with time-management
- Superior customer service skills
- Accommodate a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
- Excellent technical skills, including a familiarity with Windows, Microsoft Suite, and knowledge of various technologies
- Ability to welcome, encourage and embrace new ideas and concepts. Consider all perspectives
- Model and exemplify ethical, professional, and honest management, leadership and accountability
- Experience initiating and executing programs and services that meet the needs of the community
- Facilitate solutions and problem solve effectively
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork
- Occasionally lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds such as files, books, and other materials.
