Responsibilities
The Division of Transfusion Medicine, a clinical group within the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP), is seeking to add a full-time physician to its practice. The successful applicant will join a clinical practice staffed by nine (9) Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine board certified physicians with diverse backgrounds and interests.
It is expected that the successful applicant would be able to assume a typical, full-scope transfusion medicine practice, including blood donor evaluation and testing oversight, laboratory oversight of the various Transfusion Medicine laboratories and work units, and a full range of clinical consultation services (including participation in a clinical call schedule). Specific areas of clinical emphasis will include blood center operations, patient blood management (including massive blood transfusion and intraoperative blood salvage), immunohematology, active involvement with research activities, and teaching of residents, fellows and allied health staff. It is also the expectation that the successful candidate will have - or desire to have - laboratory leadership experience, as well as the ability to work across divisions within DLMP and collaborate across clinical departments in the organization to ensure the highest levels of patient care.
At Mayo Clinic, Transfusion Medicine provides a series of critical clinical services to colleagues and services within Surgery, Medicine, various Hospital practices, as well as Research (e.g., providing specialized services for industry sponsors manufacturing cell therapy products outside the institution for use in commercially FDA-approved or investigational therapies at Mayo Clinic). In addition, the Division of Transfusion Medicine collects 70% of the red blood cells and apheresis platelets transfused at the Mayo Clinic Rochester.
Laboratories and work units within Transfusion Medicine include:
Autotransfusion (performing Intraoperative cell salvage, acute normovolemic hemodilution, and point of care testing)
Biopharmaceutical Unit (processing, shipping, receipt, storage, and infusion of immune effector cell products)
Component Laboratory (processing whole blood donations into components, manufacturing pathogen reduced platelets, modifying blood products to meet patient special needs)
Donor Services (collection of red cells, apheresis platelets, and plasma products used at Mayo Clinic Rochester)
Human Cellular Therapy (processing peripheral blood hematopoietic progenitor cells, bone marrow and therapeutic T-cells)
Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (performing complex antibody identification, red cell serologic and molecular testing, and immunohematologic testing for internal patients and external reference laboratory clients)
Therapeutic Apheresis Treatment Unit (performing mononuclear cell collections, plasma exchange, Lipid apheresis, photopheresis, red cell exchange, leukocytapheresis, and thrombocytapheresis)
Tissue Typing Laboratory (molecular HLA typing as well as HLA antibody screening and identification for internal patients and external reference laboratory clients)
Transfusion Laboratory (performing basic antibody identification and blood product crossmatching and modification).
These laboratories and work units support two hospitals providing complex care in a quaternary setting, as well as a significant, subspecialized academic medical group practice spanning a host of specialties across nearly every aspect of medicine.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must be:
Board certified by the American Board of Pathology (ABP) in Clinical Pathology and have completed a fellowship in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine and be board certified in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine by the ABP, or
Board certified in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesia or Pediatrics and have completed a Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Fellowship and be board certified in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine by the ABP.
Candidates currently completing their final year of fellowship training are also eligible to apply, with expected board passage in the immediate term following the completion of their fellowship.
