The Nursing Director (hereafter referred to as "Director") is a participating member of the Nursing Leadership Team, and along with other leaders, is responsible for eliminating barriers that impede operations between departments and facilities. The Director provides leadership to assigned department managers, who in turn are responsible for supervising and evaluating the quality of care provided within the department. This includes development and implementation of the budget, including capital and operating budgets for approval. The Director is accountable for the achievement of capital and operating budget objectives within areas of responsibility. The Director fosters positive relationships with physicians, other directors, and associates of both the assigned department and other departments across all health system boundaries. The Director is responsible for the administration and support of clinical and service programs for his/her clinical unit(s) within their span of control. The Director functions as the administrative nursing leader for areas of responsibility with 24-hour accountability for care delivery, working closely with Nurse Managers and educators to direct all patient care and staffing activities. He/she ensures effective daily operations of the nursing unit(s) by monitoring all activities necessary to provide consistent, high quality patient care, including staffing, equipment, supplies and services. The Director has strong knowledge of the policies, procedures, and regulations that govern nursing practice and must exercise sound, independent judgement in adapting and applying leadership and clinical principles as appropriate in all situations. The Director relies on experience, judgment, and collaboration to plan and accomplish goals. Assists in the advancement of the professional practice environment by collaborating in setting the NGHS nursing strategic direction and focusing on activities that support strategic nursing initiatives. The Director ensures nursing involvement and support for the Professional Nursing Governance structure, including Unit Practice Council for every unit under his/her span of control. The Nurse Manager assists with overall clinical governance and other projects as assigned. The Director ensures nursing unit(s) is in a state of continued survey readiness by adhering to all appropriate legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements necessary to maintain hospital accreditation.
Licensure or other certifications: Licensed to practice as an RN in Georgia. National certification in either a clinical or leadership specialty.
Educational Requirements: A degree in Nursing (either BSN or MSN) and a Master's Degree, either in Nursing or other if possessing a BSN within three years of hire.
Minimum Experience: Minimum of six years experience in practice of professional nursing in an acute care facility. Successful experience in a nursing management, supervisory or comparably related professional experience position.
Other: Professional organization membership within one month of hire into the role .
Preferred Licensure or other certifications:
Preferred Educational Requirements: PhD and/or DNP.

Other: Officer in local, state and/or national professional organization.

Skill in supervision (e.g. hire, train, assign and review work, motivate, prepare performance evaluations and effectively handle disciplinary actions)
Skill in tailoring communication and performance feedback to the individual employee.
Skill in coordinating patient care services with other departments.

Participates in strategic and operational planning and implements objectives reflective of organizational philosophies, mission, and values.
In conjunction with the Executive Director and in partnership with dyad Physician leader, provides a strategic direction for the unit(s) and is accountable for the achievement of strategic and tactical goals and objectives.
Develops annual goals and objectives for the unit(s) consistent with the strategic planning and direction set by the CEO, COO & CNE.
Coordinates the development and implementation of financial plans consistent with the overall mission and strategic direction of NGHS.
Accountable for ensuring Nursing care delivery in clinical care areas according to established Nursing standards of care .
Directs and coordinates the day-to-day operational activities of the unit(s), ensuring smooth and effective patient flow throughout the system.
Ensures that appropriate levels of qualified (clinical, technical, and customer-oriented) personnel are employed on the unit(s) to provide quality patient care.
Works effectively with Medical Staff dyad partner in jointly establishing unit-based patient care pathways and protocols, and monitors for continuous quality improvement opportunities.
Actively monitors the quality of care delivered on the unit(s), including performance improvement activities, clinical metrics and any risk management activities related to clinical care and/or overall departmental operations.
Reviews quality and performance reports to ensure accuracy of data. Actively researches variances and develops appropriate action plans when indicated to reach clinical and financial goals.
Oversees various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, terminations, and other related activities.
Cost effective use of human and material resources to ensure financial viability of division and organization.
Develops annual strategic workforce plan taking into consideration the number, experience level and skill mix of staff needed for the patient population served on the unit(s). Works with Nursing Financial Business Manager to develop annual staffing plan.
Develops annual operating and capital budgets for the unit(s) with particular attention paid to the labor budget, ensuring appropriate benchmarking targets are set to provide for adequate nursing personnel to provide high quality, safe patient care.
Monitors monthly income and expense statements and bi-weekly labor productivity reports to ensure appropriate resource utilization of labor and supplies in the delivery of fiscally responsible and efficient care
Responsible for overseeing a wide variety of regulatory, administrative, and fiscal activities, both internally and externally.
Implements policies and procedures established by the CEO, COO and CNE as they relate to nursing services. Develops and recommends new policies necessary to enhance nursing care and service.
Ensure that all operational aspects of the unit(s) are in compliance with the standards of appropriate accreditation and licensing agencies.
Maintains required unit records, reports, and statistics for administrative purposes, and ensures compliance with established policies, procedures, objectives, quality controls and regulatory standard and requirements.
Ensures that reports and records are accurately completed and processed according to established time frames (performance appraisals, payroll records, personnel action forms, RL6 variances).
