Job Title  Chief of Police
Location  New Orleans, LA, US
Organization Name  TU Police Department

 

Posting Summary
The Chief of Police is responsible for providing public safety and related security services to the Tulane University community and manages all administrative, personnel, and financial responsibilities for a comprehensive 24-hour/365 days-a-year department with 90 full-time commissioned officers and 40 security officers, with a $9.0 million annual budget.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to meet all requirements for POST certification and licensing under Louisiana State Law, within one year of hire date.
• Ability to articulate, demonstrate knowledge of and consistently adhere to Louisiana Laws;
• Demonstrated strong customer service orientation; excellent human relations skills; excellent oral and writing skills; and effective public speaking skills.
• Ability to effect best practices in campus law enforcement and community policing.
• Possess a vision for excellence in campus law enforcement and the ability to develop law enforcement personnel in that vision.
• Knowledge and experience using the Incident Command System for major events including large sporting venues.
• Proven track record of collaborating with community stakeholders, to address safety issues and student behavior that affects the community.
• Ability to develop and implement successful career development programs for police officers (i.e. development and implementation of a career development and retention strategies).
• Ability to prepare and manage budgets and supervise assigned staff effectively. Budgeting and personnel management experience.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality in all work performed.

 

Required Education and/or Experience
• Bachelor’s Degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration or a closely or related field.
• 10 years federal, state, municipal, and/or university police experience, including five years command staff experience.
• Demonstrated command and management experience in law enforcement administration.
• Extensive training and experience in community policing.
• Significant experience in evaluation and assessment of law enforcement policies and procedures.

 

Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s Degree or higher in policy science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration or a closely or related field.

• Experience in planning and supervising VIP visits including dignitary protection

• Experience with CALEA Accreditation

• Louisiana POST certified
