*Experience in roadway maintenance or construction or knowledge of materials, methods, and procedures used in roadway maintenance or construction.
*Experience in operating equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, graders, backhoes, etc.
*Able to read and follow oral and written instructions
*Able to perform heavy manual labor, including frequent lifting up to 50 pounds
*Skilled in using hand and power tools
*Valid driver’s license required at hire. A Commercial Driver’s License and DOT medical card are required within 11 months of employment and maintained thereafter.
Additional Considerations
*Current CDL (Class A or B) with appropriate endorsements.
*Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
*Experience in emergency operations including snow removal, storm and accident response, and clean-up.

Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, and terrain, and standing for long periods. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles before receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement. Fingerprint-based background checks, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified before employment. Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, otherwise, applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment physical. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
