Health Specialist
- The purpose of the Health Specialist is to provide leadership and technical coaching on occupational health initiatives across RTK
- Work in a diverse and collaborative team environment
- Permanent role based in Salt Lake City, UT
About the role
We are looking for a Health Specialist to lead the occupational health program at Rio Tinto Kennecott operations in the Health, & Safety team, reporting to the RTK Health Manager.
This role is a great opportunity to influence across a diverse and multi-faceted operation to improve Health and psychological health. Key objectives:
- Lead the health improvement work across multiple locations to ensure compliance with legislative and RT standards.
- Lead the RTK Psychological Health roadmap and initiatives
- Provision of SME advice to the business with respect to occupational Health
- Education, communication and engagement with RT HSE groups, site leaders and operational personnel
- Take ownership of Occupational health management and initiatives such as physical health, nutrition, smoking cessation, psychological health and wellbeing.
- Undertake first-party assurance against the Rio Tinto health standards
- Support and provision of case management services
- Identify and lead process improvements to standardize and simplify occupational health and hygiene processes
- Recommend key control methods (considering the hierarchy of control) for health and hygiene risk reduction and evaluate control effectiveness
- Coordinate medical review and follow-up post-health surveillance as required
- Advising on legislative and industry standard requirements as they relate to occupational health
- Lead annual and legislative reporting
- Lead the implementation of the RTK Fatigue roadmap
- Assistance with the preparation and planning for HS&E audits (both internal and external)
- Provides MSHA and OSHA training to new and existing employees.
- Educates and coaches leaders to better understand their workers’ health risk profiles
- Work with RTK Health and Health Area of Expertise to effectively manage the health risk profile and deliver Rio Tinto objectives.
About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- Bachelors degree in Public Health, occupational health or closely related field
- 5 + years’ prior work experience in occupational Health, in mining or similar Heavy Industry advantageous.
- strong data analysis, data quality check, and procedure review skills.
- Experience in leading multidisciplinary project teams
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present to all levels and audiences.
- Excellent computer skills, knowledge of MS Office, Excel, MS Project etc.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Valid Driver’s License

Where you will be working
Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
