Job description

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE), at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), is accepting applications from candidates for a full-time research position at the Faculty Associate level. The candidate is expected to work collaboratively with existing department faculty and staff members, provide mentorship and research assistance for graduate students, and maintain an active research program.  

Primary duties include:

• Planning, acquiring, installing, and maintaining cyber-physical systems experimental testbeds components such as software-defined radios, sensors, embedded systems, and network equipment.
• Reverse engineering of hardware and software to assist in troubleshooting and research.
• Providing technical support for student research for MS theses and/or PhD dissertations.
• Writing technical reports and presentations as a co-author and presenting the results of scientific research.
• Developing instructional materials to support short and graduate courses in the above-specified technical areas.
• Occasional delivery of education and training courses, as negotiated with the hiring organization.
• Collaborating with multiple faculty principle investigators (PIs) to perform the above tasks.
• Travel to present research findings or educational topics, not to exceed ten percent per year.

NPS is a fully accredited graduate school with students from all U.S. military services, as well as foreign military officers. U.S. citizenship is required. Salary is highly competitive and includes a generous locality allowance. Monterey is a short drive south from the San Francisco Bay area and is ideally situated along the spectacular central California coast.

Applicants with foreign education will be required to select from a list of private organizations that are members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES), which provide foreign education evaluations acceptable to NPS.

Condition of Employment:

• The ability to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
• The ability to travel (to Monterey and/or temporary work locations) at least twice per year.
• The ability to relocate to Monterey or the immediate area.

Minimum Qualifications include:

• An earned bachelor’s degree in a discipline that supports the research line and departmental thesis needs such as: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in STEM fields such as engineering, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, computer engineering, computer science, systems engineering, mathematics, or related fields

• Demonstrated aptitude of scientific research in application of theories, principles, practical concepts, systems, and processes.

Experience in embedded systems engineering, programming, hardware and/or software reverse engineering, wireless communications, radar, or related fields.

Preferred experience teaching in a scientific field.
