Job Summary
Ironworkers perform skilled work involving structural steel, ornamental iron work, and reinforcing work.

Work Environment:
1. Work is assigned through the foreperson, work management group, service office, or via the director of building maintenance & grounds or his designee in oral or written form. The ironworker is responsible for assuring their work is completed properly in accordance with statutes and codes in a safe and timely manner. The ironworker is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services. The ironworker must exemplify high standards of professionalism, loyalty, craftsmanship, and dedication.
2.Interacts with campus customers, supervision, and peers. Creates a work environment which develops accountability for performance and develops teamwork and unity within the shop and throughout campus.
3.May work in extreme weather conditions.
4.Must be aware of potential danger from moving parts and equipment.
5.May be exposed to dust, loud noise, smoke, and cleaning compounds.
6.May work in temperature extremes ranging from freezing weather to steam tunnels.
7.May work at heights to inspect equipment located on platforms or hung above tall ceilings.
8.May work amid hazards of work sites such as dust, noise, and in areas such as coal-fired power plants, animal rooms, and laboratories.
9.May be exposed to radiation and chemical fumes, molten lead and welding arcs. Use of Personal Protective Equipment is required when hazards exist.



Minimum Qualifications


Certificate of completion of apprenticeship as an Ironworker under a registered Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training program
OR
Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman Ironworker, with a minimum of four (4) years (48 months) of actual work at the trade, which may have included apprenticeship or vocational training. (The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Ironworkers i.e. raising, placing, and uniting iron or steel girders, columns, and other structural members to form completed structures or structural frameworks.)


Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license.

Appointment Information


This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2196 - Ironworker position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. Salary is based on the prevailing rate, currently $36.08/hour.
