Congressional Processing Digital Archivist
This is a grant-funded clinical faculty position with an initial one-year contract, and the opportunity for additional annual appointments for up to three years. University Libraries seeks to hire one Congressional Processing Digital Archivist.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The University of Alabama Libraries seeks a dynamic, forward-thinking individual for the position of Congressional Processing Digital Archivist to oversee processing, access, and preservation of born digital and digitized materials in the Senator Richard C. Shelby collection. The Congressional Processing Digital Archivist will also be responsible for managing day-to-day collection digitization activities for the congressional collection, including batch upload to CONTENTdm and/or Omeka S, with a focus on accuracy and productivity. This position will play a pivotal role in improving discovery and accessibility of born digital and digitized materials for the benefit of researchers. The successful candidate will be committed to More Product Less Process (MPLP) workflows.
This is a clinical faculty appointment reporting to the Head of Special Collections and working collaboratively with librarians, archivists, and staff in W.S. Hoole Special Collections. Senator Shelby is Alabama’s longest-serving senator. He achieved national prominence as chair of four committees: Appropriations, Banking, Intelligence, and Rules. He also visits each of Alabama’s 67 counties every year. The Congressional Processing Digital Archivist will be responsible for assessing born digital and digitized files for content, research interest, and restrictions and determining appropriate levels of processing and descriptive metadata to prepare for researcher access. The Congressional Processing Digital Archivist will identify and review all files for restricted or sensitive data, and will appraise, organize, and describe born digital materials in a finding aid. This position will be responsible for creating engaging online exhibits showcasing the unique digital assets in the Senator Richard C. Shelby collection.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to: creating guidelines and implementing MPLP workflows for processing, preserving, and managing born-digital materials; facilitating transfer and storage for digital materials; determining disposition, tracking and storage for removable media post-capture; determining context and organization of born digital files; performing systematic assessments for Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and other sensitive data and suggesting appropriate strategies for stewardship; digitizing physical records within the hybrid collection and creating descriptive metadata for digitized and born digital materials for upload to relevant digital asset management systems such as CONTENTdm and Omeka S; creating DACS-compliant finding aids at the appropriate processing level to achieve usability; managing subject authority control in the University Libraries archival data management system, ArchivesSpace; monitoring hardware and digital storage needs for collection digital content; curating and implementing online digital exhibits featuring collection content with standard-compliant metadata; and supervising student workers. Responsibilities of the position evolve as the library environment continues to change.

SALARY/BENEFITS: 12 month clinical faculty appointment at rank of assistant professor contingent upon grant funding. This position will include a one-year contract with the opportunity for additional annual appointments for up to three years. Salary is $70,000.00.
