Position Summary/Description:

This position will manage the Neuroscience Center's business operation while overseeing all administrative support associated with a complex multi-million dollar (>$20M/year) research enterprise. The Neuroscience Center is comprised of six operationally and administratively distinct sub-units:

1. The Neuroscience Center administrative team.
2. The Neuroscience Curriculum-this is the only PhD-granting graduate program on the UNC campus. This graduate program matriculates an average of ten PhD students annually and is partially supported by an NIH T32 predoctoral NRSA .
3. Continuing education and outreach programs, including organization and administrative oversight of a weekly seminar series, annual symposium, NeuroSpark pilot awards, and annual Perl/ UNC Neuroscience Prize.
4. Microscopy Core.
5. Bioinformatics Core.
6. Neurotools vector Core.

This position will oversee administrative management of annual contract and grant activity in the Neuroscience Center. Ensuring faculty compliance with regulatory agencies and overseeing pre and post award processing of all contracts and grants submitted by the Center. The Business Manager will stay abreast of funding opportunities and advise the department of potential research funding sources.

In addition to contracts and grants, this position manages the Center's State appropriation, Overhead receipts, Gifts, and Endowments. Will provide detailed analysis and recommendations to the Center Directors to achieve optimal and appropriate use of funding resources.

Furthermore, personnel management is required to include direct staff reports and coordination of laboratory recruitments, hiring, and re-appointments. Position is responsible for personnel development and issuing performance/competency assessments. Other Human Resource functions include oversight of departmental immigration needs as well as TIM (payroll) administration.

This position will also liaise and oversee all center Building Services and UNC Facilities service to address any and all issues that arise in office and business space in the Neuroscience Center.

Education and Experience:

Extensive management background in a large organization; solid demonstrated leadership capability; superior financial management and analytical skills; comprehensive knowledge and understanding of academic research administration and outstanding, effective written and verbal communication skills with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Skills and knowledge include: capability to lead a team and produce results; proficiency in setting organizational priorities and goals for the business office; interpersonal skills to be used in working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders; strong focus on customer service and experience with continuous improvement; experience in short-and-long term planning; working knowledge of Federal, State and University regulatory requirements governing grants; demonstrated proficiency in pre-and post-award processes; strong financial skills with a variety of fund types including state, F&A, trust and grants; ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion; and experience with effective management and supervision of staff.
