Position Summary/Description:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Understanding and Promoting Self-regulation Interventions across DEvelopment ( UPSIDE ) Team conducts interdisciplinary research that develops, implements, and evaluates self-regulation interventions that promote resilience for children and youth across the developmental spectrum from early childhood through young adulthood, with particular focus on youth who face chronic adversity. The team has developed a mindfulness-based social-emotional learning program for middle and high school students called Be CALM (Be Cool, Attentive, Logical & Mature), which is currently being adapted for school counselors to support students experiencing high stress. Other research aims to increase understanding of emotional wellbeing in adolescents in the context of stress using innovative methods like ecological momentary assessment ( EMA ). In addition to research activities, our team also provides training and consultation to educators interested in delivering the Be CALM (Be Cool, Attentive, Logical & Mature) program.

The Educational Consultant position will assist in developing program curriculum and materials and provide educational consultation to several school districts implementing an adaptation of the Be CALM program for school counselors, including providing training and technical assistance, and managing continuous quality improvement.

Regarding intervention design and development, this position will contribute clinical expertise in mindfulness and school programming to inform the design and development of a new social-emotional program. The Educational Consultant will prepare a curriculum manual and materials, integrating full knowledge of adolescent development, mindfulness, social-emotional learning, instructional methods, and the school delivery context. They will analyze and integrate existing research and knowledge of national practice guidelines, school policies, and recommendations from national experts to inform the development of a comprehensive year-long professional development program for school mental health staff. The position will adapt training and consultation to optimize implementation given the unique cultural contexts, resources, and challenges of several educational systems we are partnering with.

Regarding overseeing program implementation, this position will provide program services and technical assistance to school counselors in alignment with our federally funded grant protocol, utilizing best practice implementation science. The Educational Consultant will coordinate and manage delivery of a multi-component social-emotional intervention across several school districts, including coordinating intervention components and documenting fidelity. The position will consult with district administrators on program needs, implementation experiences and challenges, identify improvements needed, and address any concerns through collaborative planning to ensure maximal program impact. The consultant will summarize and interpret program implementation data to support the Be CALM Intervention team.
