The Last mile technology domain has been growing tremendously over the years and is expected to reach from a market size of $30B in 2018 to $55B by end of 2025. Amazon Last Mile Tech (LMT) drives automations and optimizations of Amazon’s last leg deliveries, supporting delivery of more than 8.5 billion packages in 2021. We, the Amazon Maps Data (AMD) organization within LMT, are responsible for building big data technologies to learn and curate high-fidelity map datasets which model the real world at a fidelity that enables safe and efficient logistics for last mile operations at Amazon. As Amazon, we strive to provide our customers fast and on-time delivery, multiple pickup and delivery options for their convenience, and enable this uniformly and consistently across the globe while keeping our drivers safe and providing them an unparallel delivery experience. To achieve this vision, AMD curates the best-in-class map datasets to plan routes and navigate drivers safely, efficiently and intuitively. Our maps data powers more than 10 million trips and 15 million kilometers of driving by last mile delivery drivers every day.
Why build another Mapping system?
The answer is simple, we want to invent and simplify the way our partners, customers, and teams utilize this mapping system. We want to dive deep into the complex obstructions and enable more in-depth solutions. We will utilize multiple modes of transportation, and traffic cognizance to optimize and simplify the ability to reach millions of delivery points around the world. As Amazon, we are uniquely positioned to understand the mapping needs of delivery drivers during their on-road and at-stop navigation experiences and leverage it to build a logistics centric mapping experience that excels in all the aspects of coverage, accuracy, freshness and richness over consumer grade maps in the industry.
What do we do?
Teams within AMD builds geospatial big data pipelines and storage solutions that ingest raw map data from multiple heterogenous sources and fuses them into one single map using machine learning models and graph algorithms. The machine learning models range from regression models that map-match map elements to deep learning models that align maps features consumed from different sources. We learn data from high quality aerial imagery and street-side images captured by our connected delivery vehicles through computer vision and neural network models. Artifacts generated from this data are used in (i) shortest path computations for planning of delivery routes, (ii) providing turn-by-turn navigation instructions to drivers, (iii) displaying the map visuals on the driver facing app, (iv) planning delivery sectors within the jurisdiction of a delivery station, and (v) displaying safety alerts for drivers. Beside extensive usage of AWS cloud services, the team builds software using bleeding edge big data technologies like GeoSpark and GraphX. We frequently collaborate and contribute to the Geospatial open-source and GIS academic research communities.

Key job responsibilities
You will be responsible for the core datasets that transform the experience drivers have as they navigate to customer doorsteps. You will be expected to build and grow your team that works on cutting edge mapping algorithms and software. You will have enormous opportunity to impact the customer experience, design, architecture, and implementation of technology across both your and partner teams that enable the end-to-end driver journey. You will need to draw from your deep technical expertise to hire and mentor engineers, complete hands-on technical work and provide leadership on complex technical issues. You will manage and be responsible for delivering some of our most strategic technical projects. You will play a critical role in broad business planning and influence our long-term technical and business strategy.
A successful candidate will have an established background in big data tooling and in building highly scalable and mission critical software libraries, with extensive technical knowledge of development techniques and latest practices. They have a passion for managing engineering talent in a fast-paced environment. They will have the ability to drill down into low-level details when necessary and possess exceptional project management and communication skills. Prior experience in building digital maps is a plus.

Basic Qualifications
3+ years of engineering team management experience
7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Experience delivering products against plan in a fast-paced, multi-disciplined, distributed-responsibility and often ambiguous environment
Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $148,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
