Department Overview
The PG&E Meteorology Operations group provides weather related business intelligence to ensure the delivery of safe and reliable electric and gas service to our customers. The PG&E meteorology team includes multiple operational meteorologists who provide daily weather forecasts for various lines of business. As part of the wider Meteorology and Fire Science department, Meteorology Operations is also responsible for communicating fire weather threats to the greater PG&E team.
Position Summary
Meteorology Operations is looking for a talented summer intern who is looking to gain real world forecasting experience. Under the supervision of experienced Meteorologists, the intern will work as a member of the team in the office on forecasting shifts, learning hand-on:
Temperature forecasting, including many of California's microclimates
Forecasting adverse weather and its impact to the distribution and transmission grid
Forecasting conditions in our Hydro system that may promote snowmelt or runoff
Warning of severe weather that posses a safety risk to field employees
PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.
The hourly rate for this position ranges from $19.56 to $32.60.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Currently enrolled and earning a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Meteorology / Atmospheric Science. Undergraduate students MUST be working towards a degree that meets the National Weather Service Educational Requirements. Graduate students must hold an undergraduate degree that meets the National Weather Service Educational Requirements.
Students MUST be continuing education towards degree during and/or after internship.
Desired:
Previous forecasting experience, through participation in the National Forecast Challenge, previous Internships, etc
Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
Basic coding experience, including Python, SQL, VBA
Strong problem solving and analytical skills
Strong communication skills, both oral and written
Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
PG&E is unable to provide VISA sponsorship to students on an F-1, J-1 or other student visa for this position.
