Jr. Specialist - Stachowicz Lab

Position Overview:
A reasonable estimate for this position is $51,300 at Step 1 or $54,600 at Step 2.


We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to be involved in studies focusing on marine plant-microbe interactions from both the plant and microbial perspective. This position is for up to one year depending on project needs and availability of the preferred candidate and includes participating in field and lab studies at the Bodega Marine Lab. The selected candidate will conduct experiments with plants and microbes via laboratory-based experimental research and/or field based observational research. The JS will assist in experimental design and execute studies in consultation with the PI and other project personnel. They will provide feedback on aspects of the studies, (e.g. brainstorming sessions, field troubleshooting, etc.). They will help with collecting and summarizing data, may assist in data analyses, and will provide information to be used for annual and related reports. They may assist the project by writing permit renewals and by participating in lab discussions.

The successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree in a marine sciences or biological sciences field and will have experience working with marine plants in field and lab environments as well as in conducting marine-based field and laboratory experiments.

The successful candidate will have strong problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team. They will also have demonstrated the attention to detail required to successfully collect, organize, and store data. They will also have experience with and be comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions; working evenings or weekends to fulfill experimental or maintenance requirements, as well a working during normal working hours in office, field, and laboratories.

The duties of this position are designated to the following criteria:

Research (90%): The junior specialist will assist with field and laboratory activities in the Stachowicz lab to be based at BML and on the UC Davis campus as project needs change with occasional work in the genome center. Specific tasks include:
-care of and growth seagrasses in both controlled temperature room and outdoor tank experiments, including raising plants from seed and propagating from clonal shoots
-maintaining sterile technique and culturing and transfer of seeds using sterile technique,
-construction/maintenance of experimental systems,
-assisting in molecular techniques including nucleic DNA and metabolite extractions from sediment and plant tissues
-grow and maintain bacteria culture collections
-assisting in quality control of datasets and basic data curation and preliminary analyses.
-organize other lab assistants, maintain connections between volunteers, PI, postdocs and graduate students, write interim project reports, and contribute to the preparation of journal articles.
-document lab and field protocols and discuss alternations or modifications with supervisor
-attend laboratory meetings, engage in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results,
-assist PI and project personnel in preparing results for publication by performing data analysis and writing sections of manuscripts for publication as needed

University and Public Service (10%)
The selected candidate will train and mentor undergraduate students in research techniques related to experimental maintenance and data collection. May also assist project personnel or participate in outreach.
