Division/Department Information

The First Year Writing Program within the Department of Core Studies is seeking applications for a tenure-track faculty position to teach First Year Writing to a diverse undergraduate population. All St. John's University students are required to take First Year Writing, and the program is responsible for designing and teaching the curriculum for this course. Faculty design their own courses, which are connected by a shared set of learning objectives and an emphasis on high impact teaching practices and student engagement. The candidate will join a program committed to portfolio-based assessment, multimodal composition, and inclusive pedagogical practices, and will participate in program-level assessment, university-wide service, and student writing initiatives. The Department of Core Studies is eager to attract candidates who represent the rich diversity of the students and communities we are proud to serve in the New York Metropolitan area. In addition, we seek candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

Responsibilities

The position entails teaching three First Year Writing courses per semester in person, in addition to maintaining a schedule of intensive writing feedback, including individual conferences with students. An active research agenda is required.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric, Writing Studies, or a related field by time of appointment, or hold an M.F.A. Alternatively, we will consider candidates who have an MA degree in one of these fields plus 24 credits. All candidates must have at least four years' experience teaching English Composition or its equivalent. All candidates should demonstrate teaching excellence and show a commitment to early college students. Preferred qualifications include a record of publication related to pedagogy, composition, and/or rhetoric, and evidence of ongoing research production. We are especially interested in candidates whose research focuses on cultural rhetoric's, linguistic diversity, multimodal composition, critical literacies, community writing, and social justice pedagogy.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $65,000 - $73,000 .
