DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The UC Santa Cruz Police Department is responsible for all law enforcement services, including maintenance of order, crime prevention and education programs, emergency preparedness and incident response, community policing, and participates in mutual aid agreements with neighboring law enforcement agencies and other UC campuses statewide. The police department also has responsibility for Emergency Management, Police Student Ambassador Program, crime prevention, and physical security systems. The Police Department is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation.

JOB SUMMARY The Police Trainee is the non-sworn entry training classification in to the University of California Police Department. Applicants selected as Police Trainees must successfully complete a CA-POST Basic Police Academy sponsored by the department. The Basic Police Academy is an intensive 888-hour, full-time course, which lasts approximately six months. The full-time intensive Academy requires a strong commitment from the recruit and their families. During training, incumbents do not have police powers and are subject to all the policies and procedures of the University of California, the University of California Police Department and the police academy attended. Trainees may be assigned non-safety duties in the Police Department such as assisting in prevention, collecting information and data, and transporting people and materials. Upon successful completion of the academy, Police Trainees will be eligible to fill vacant Police Officer positions (TC: 5323). Promotion to a sworn Police Officer position is contingent upon successful completion of the basic academy and the final review of the Police Chief. Upon promotion to Police Officer, the selected incumbent must successfully complete a Field Training Program (FTP) and a probationary period of no less than 12 months.

JOB DUTIES 100% - Police Trainee - Under direct supervision, enroll and attend an approved Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) basic police academy to be trained in the technical knowledge, skills and physical capabilities required to perform police service.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Ability to understand, interpret and apply State and local laws and regulations, departmental policies and procedures, and other technical literature pertaining to law enforcement.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency or hazardous situations and adopt an effective course of action.
- Ability to observe and remember facts and details of incidents.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to learn to operate firearms safely and skillfully.
- Ability to obtain information through interview, interrogation and observation.
- Ability to write clear and accurate reports on a computer using a basic word processing program.
- Ability to adapt to changing police processes utilizing computer technology.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to communicate verbally in a clear and effective manner.
- Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with a wide range of different individuals and groups from the community.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Knowledge of current police practices, protocols and procedures.
- Knowledge of the workings of the California criminal justice system.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws applicable to the police function generally, and to the University of California police function specifically.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT - Must pass background investigation to ensure applicant is of good moral character [GC 1031(d)] and free of any physical, emotional, or mental conditions that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer [GC1031(f)] so that nothing in his/her background is inconsistent with performing peace officer duties. The background investigation is also conducted to ensure that the applicant meets the minimum selection requirements of Commission Regulation 1953 and Government Code Section 1031. Applicant will be subjected to an identity/fingerprint check and criminal history check; Felony convictions or certain misdemeanor convictions that are disqualifying per CA GC sections 1029, 1030, 1031 (c), California Penal Code section 29805, and 18 USC 922 (d) (9); physical ability testing, drug screening, medical screening, psychological testing, treadmill stress test, and may be subject to a deception detection examination such as a polygraph or voice stress test, and/or a pre-offer personality test. Must pass comprehensive medical and psychological pre-placement examinations as established by the University, state and federal law for Police Officers.
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a pre-hire criminal history background check and a pre-hire credentialing check.
- Age/Citizenship At least 21 years of age by the date of the academy graduation.
- U.S. citizen Education and Experience Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED (score of 40 or higher on individual sub-tests and a total score of 225 or higher).
- Must possess a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
- Interviewees will be required to provide a current DMV record.
- Physical Condition Physical health, strength, and agility necessary to meet the physical demands of police work as determined by physical ability testing and medical screening.
- Must have vision of 20/100 correctable to 20/30, with normal color vision.
- Body weight must be proportional to height.
- Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
- Will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
- Selected candidate will be required to take a TB test.
- Selected candidate will be required to provide proof of negative TB test.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
- Clery Act : This position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA); required to report crimes, incidents, and disciplinary referral statistics as required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (20 USC 1092(f)).
- Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
- Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
- Will be required to wear a University provided uniform.
