Job description
Hawthorne Animal Hospital is a growing, privately-owned 2 doctor practice with a friendly, team-oriented work culture. Hawthorne Animal Hospital offers high-level medicine within our small animal practice. This is the place to utilize your technical skills while working with a fun-loving team dedicated to the clients and pets in our care.
For our Veterinary Assistant position, we are looking for someone with: positivity, passion to provide best quality care and act as an advocate for our patients, with empathy to provide comfort to our clients, enthusiasm and motivation to grow within the practice and to keep learning as medicine evolves, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a strong team mindset. Detailed training is provided to all new hires.
Responsibilities
- Feed and weigh animals.
- Clean cages.
- Sterilize equipment and clean examination tables and rooms.
- Restrain animals during examinations or vaccinations.
- Soothe upset or frightened animals.
- Administer medication prescribed by Veterinarians.
- Observe animal behavior or health condition and report to the Vet.
- Help in cases of emergencies.
- Handle administrative duties such as scheduling appointments or calling patients in the examination room by priority.
- Keep accurate records and logs.
- Reassure clients that their pets are being cared for and explain issues.
- Advise pet owners on nutrition and healthcare.
Skills:
- Proven experience as a Veterinary Assistant or similar position working with animals is an advantage.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Exceptional work ethic.
- Ability to work as a team.
- Patient and caring personality.
- Ability to follow instructions properly.
- Comfortable being around animals.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (e.g. lift up to 40 lbs.)
- Availability to occasionally work in emergencies.
- High school diploma; a certificate from a Veterinary Assistant program is a plus.
