Position description

The Integrative Biology Department at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Postdoc in the Shapira Lab, in the general area of Microbiome research and microbial genetics.

Specifically, the search is for a postdoc who will take part in a project focused on identification and characterization of bacterial factors required for host gut colonization by beneficial commensals. The project was initiated by RB-TnSeq analyses (and additional screens may be required) and focuses on bacterial genes required for colonizing the model host C.elegans, either alone or in the context of a complex microbiome.

Research in the Shapira lab seeks to understand the fundamentals of host-microbe interactions in the context of the whole organism. Research focuses on the shaping of the gut microbiome, employing microcosm experiments, synthetic communities, next-gen sequencing and functional analyses. Additional efforts are aimed at understanding the bacterial side, using bacterial mutagenesis to reveal genetic factors that are important for gut colonization and persistence. The level of investigation in the Shapira lab spans the range between molecular mechanisms, ecological constraints and impact on evolution. To achieve all this, we are using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a powerful model organism for genetic studies as a host model.

The accepted postdoc will carry out research to address the goal described above, preferably while mentoring undergraduate students. They will share results through lab meetings and discussions with the PI, and will summarize results in the form of scientific papers. In addition, postdocs are expected to take part, as all other lab members, in a limited range of standard lab chores.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in a PhD degree program (or equivalent international degree).

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
PhD (or equivalent international degree). No more than three years of post-degree research experience by start date.

Preferred qualifications
Experience in microbial genetics (genetic screens, gene disruption)
Experience in next-gen sequencing and microbiome analysis
Computational skills (R, python) and bioinformatic
Experience in C. elegans biology
Lab bench experience and proven research abilities
Independence in conducting research as well as ability to work in a team
