UCSD Health Sciences is a $1 billion dollar plus organization encompassing 16 academic departments (14 clinical, 2 basic sciences), 2 pre academic/hospital departments, 2 professional schools (School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), 2 hospitals, and various other programs and units all dedicated towards fulfilling the Health Sciences missions.
The Department of Pathology plays a key role in the University's three missions. It aims to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research and education. The Department provides diagnostic pathology services in a wide variety of subspecialties with highly trained subspecialists who are recognized for their expertise. The Department's research programs are diverse and interface with a wealth of basic and translational research programs that are a hallmark of UC San Diego.
Under general supervision of a physician-scientist Principal investigator (PI), independently manage a growing research laboratory studying chromatin and epigenetics during mouse brain development. Organize laboratory operations for PI and research staff (~5 lab members, mainly undergraduates). Coordinate research activities in the lab including scheduling and organization of studies, finding appropriate protocols and executing experiments. Install, operate and maintain laboratory equipment and train lab members in their use. Train lab members in various techniques used in the lab. Perform at full operational skill level mouse colony maintenance and husbandry. Participate in animal studies including surgery, behavioral testing and analysis of tissue. Execute tissue culture experiments, including preparation and culture of mouse cerebellar granule neurons cultures. Design, develop and perform Western blotting and immunofluorescence analysis and confocal microscopy methods. Perform additional standard methods in molecular biology and biochemistry
Theoretical knowledge of a life science such as is typically acquired by a Bachelor's Degree in a field related to the research being conducted. Related fields may include any of the following fields of study: molecular biology, required immunology, and biochemistry,
Extensive demonstrated experience in cell culture, transfection, Western blotting and immunohistochemistry
Demonstrated experience and excellent ability to perform standard repetitive techniques that may be required in research protocols related to specific lab.
Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply protocols in conducting research. Demonstrated ability in following step wise experimental protocols. Skill to troubleshoot adaptations of experimental protocols.
Independently demonstrated skill in the operation and maintenance of various lab equipment.
Demonstrated knowledge to read and use Material Safety Data Sheet's. Knowledge of environmental health and safety requirements and to assure safety in the lab. Experienced in working and maintaining a sterile environment. Demonstrated ablity to follow established EH&S Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.
Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as effectively recommend and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.
Demonstrated skill in managing accurate record keeping and ability to organize, analyze, and calculate data.
Experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as MS Word and Excel. Knowledge to work with and learn new software for analysis
Effective and diplomatic oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a variety of personnel from different laboratories and instruct in optimal procedures for assays.
Willingness to learn new techniques and tasks and share knowledge to inform and teach students and paraprofessionals new techniques.
Knowledge sufficient to coordinate studies with other departments and the lab. Demonstrated effective time management skills to plan and organize work assignments in an efficient and productive manner.
