Job description
Range Technician (ARL-2024-20100):
Bowhead has an immediate need for a Range Technician to support the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) on Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG). The Engineering Technician in this position performs standardized or prescribed assignments involving a sequence of related operations.
- This position involves working with Depleted Uranium (DU) and requires contract-specified medical tests and examinations.
- Following specific instructions, assembles or constructs simple or standard equipment or parts; may service or repair simple instruments or equipment.
- Conducts a variety of tests using established methods. Prepares test specimens, adjusts and operates equipment, and records test data, pointing out deviations resulting from equipment malfunction or observational errors.
- Records pertinent data in the appropriate shot logs on the facility, paying attention to detail and making precise measurements.
- Gathers and maintains specified records of engineering data such as tests, drawings, etc.; performs computations by substituting numbers in specified formulas; plots data and draws simple curves and graphs.
- Performs a wide variety of facility maintenance, including grass cutting, operating string trimmers, cleaning and organizing in preparation for tours, demos, and inspections.
- Records projectile, target and test data on appropriate form or notebook; enters some data into electronic file format, which is either a standard used at the facility, or one provided by project engineer. Reviews data entries for errors or inconsistencies.
- Follows appropriate standard operating procedures and adheres to applicable safety and security practices. Practices good housekeeping at facility to ensure that all procedures and practices are maintained, including periodic cleaning of experimental facilities, offices, and storage areas.
- Assists with preparation for experiments by assembling target stands and associated hardware. Loads x-ray cassettes, sets up targets, data capturing equipment, and other hardware associated with small caliber ballistic testing. After the completion of experiments, cleans up all associated post-test debris and assists with collection of onsite data.
- Transports ammunition and related hardware to and from experimental facilities, ammunition plants, and ammunition magazines upon training and certification as Ammo Handler. Transportation of ammunition requires a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with HAZMAT endorsement.
- Assists in data capture via Powermax 1260 X-ray machine.
- Performs small engine modifications and repairs at EF-9 facility.
- Is DU and Respirator Qualified, requiring compliance with all medical surveillance methods to stay certified to work with Depleted Uranium and associated x-ray equipment.
- Must hold license to operate forklift and range vehicles. Is capable of operating a wide variety of facility maintenance equipment, zero-turn mowers, tractors, gators, etc. Assists in snow removal as well.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Familiarity with ballistic testing practices, becoming proficient operating a wide variety of facility equipment under direction of a higher grade technicians, including but not limited to: High Speed digital cameras, x-rays, scanners, oscilloscopes, still digital cameras, etc. Responsible for working out timing and lighting in the operations of x-rays and high speed digital cameras.
- Capable of operating a wide variety of facility maintenance equipment, zero-turn mowers, tractors, gators, etc. Assists in snow removal as well.
- Maintains the capability to certify MPPEH for disposal of range debris/materials.
- Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
- Willingness to work with hazardous chemicals using proper personal protective equipment and after receiving necessary training on handling such materials that will be provided on the job.
- Ability to obtain a license to operate a forklift, if not already certified.
- Prior experience with Microsoft Office software preferred.
- Prior experience writing technical documentation such as a report for a class or work logs for a customer.
Must maintain at all times:
- Certification to operate Government and Bowhead Equipment and Vehicles
Physical Demands:
- The duties require a significant amount of physical labor associated with setup and teardown of equipment and materiel at test sites.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively.
- Must be capable of prolonged periods of walking, standing, bending, and stooping.
- Must have the ability to twist, bend and squat periodically.
- Must be able of working in typical local weather conditions, at heights, and in confined spaces.
- Must have the ability to be medically cleared for wearing a respirator.
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
