Job description
Position Summary:
The Plasma Physicist will be dedicated to Nusano’s ion source at the Valencia, CA facility. The Physicist will be responsible for operation, maintenance, and upgrades on one or more plasma isotope enrichment devices. Interacting with Nusano’s internal science and engineering staff in addition to a number of external consultants and vendors will be required. As the project moves from the design phase to installation and operations the Physicist will support the quality control, alignment, commissioning, and upgrade of the plasma enrichment devices. One of these devices will most likely be dedicated to enriching activated materials.
What You'll Do:
- Help with design and construction of the plasma isotope enrichment devices
- Work with researchers to guide improvements
- Model fields and plasma-wave interactions in a transit-time device
- Collect data to verify operational status of the devices and track long-term trends
- Maintain plasma enrichment lab equipment and supervise workers
- Assist in control system development
- Train operators on procedures, tuning, and machine parameters
- Support 24/7 operations as needed
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Physics or closely related field
- 5+ Years of experience with experimental plasma physics
- Experience with plasma-wave interaction, plasma processing, RF systems, superconducting magnets, high vacuum systems, and high voltage systems
- High proficiency using SolidWorks or equivalent 3D modeling and 2D prints
- Experience with E&M simulation tools (COMSOL, OmniTrak, Elegant, CST, WARP, FEMM, etc.)
- Experience with fluid and thermal simulation tools (ANSYS, SolidWorks Flow, etc.)
- Ability to support 24/7 operations as needed
Preferred Requirements:
- PhD in Physics or closely related field
- Experience with ECR plasma production
- Experience with high density plasmas
- Experience with electromechanical instrumentation and design
- Experience with high power RF (~300 kHz, and ~95 GHz)
- Experience with plasma processing
- Experience with plasma antennas and wave coupling
- Programming in EPICS
Physical Requirements:
- Must be comfortable working in a facility that produces radiation
- Work to be conducted in both an office environment and the production facility
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time. Frequent use of computer with repetitive use of keyboard, mouse and manual dexterity.
- Must be able to work in the presence of strong magnetic field
- 2-4 weeks of travel per year for visiting Nusano’s research facility, visiting vendors, and attending conferences
