Department of Pesticide Regulation

Location

Job description

Job Description and Duties

The mission of the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) is to protect human health and the environment by regulating pesticide sales and use, and by fostering reduced-risk pest management. The Human Health Assessment (HHA) Branch is responsible for evaluating toxicity and exposure data as part of the pesticide registration process. To assist HHA in meeting this goal, the incumbent will be responsible for evaluating potential exposure and risks of pesticidal active ingredients or formulated products to support eventual registration decisions by the department. The incumbent analyzes, evaluates, and interprets toxicity studies for toxicological endpoint selection and point of departure (POD) identification. This will involve locating, reviewing, and evaluating pesticide product labels and human exposure data to help estimate pesticide exposure in humans. The incumbent will need to describe their rationale for selecting specific studies and the assumptions used in the POD identification and exposure calculations and should apply the principles of risk assessment to estimate the potential health risks of pesticide products in product registration reviews. The incumbent will also be responsible for understanding and keeping current on pertinent state and federal regulations and policies used to develop pesticide exposure assessment documents. It is expected that the incumbent will also support the development of measures to mitigate potential exposure and health risks. They will work collaboratively with scientists across the Human Health Assessment (HHA) Branch and other branches to support a comprehensive multi-media, and multi-pathway approach to pesticide human health risk analysis and mitigation. The incumbent will also perform critical reviews of data and evaluate studies submitted by registrants, DPR staff, and other agencies for scientific integrity and support of HHA’s responsibilities.
