Job description

1. Overall responsibility for managing the services needed to support externally funded faculty research, including initial proposal submission, research compliance, conflict of interest and commitment review, and research integrity. She/he has direct responsibility for the Office of Sponsored Projects, Office of Research Compliance, Conflict of Interest Office, Office of Animal Resource Services (IACUC Office), Office of the Human Research Protections Program, Office of Research Integrity, Office of Export Controls, and Office of Research Enterprise Operations. She/he also has overall responsibility for the Research Security Program. Staff in these offices number approximately 130 individuals with a total annual budget of roughly $16 million. 2. Convenes the 'Major Deals' Operating Group, which leads the University's effort to be an agile partner in negotiating large-scale corporate-sponsored research agreements and resolving problematic terms and conditions. This group comprises critical leaders from across the University, including Corporate and Foundation Giving, Yale Ventures, Office of Sponsored Projects, Controllers Office, Office of the General Counsel, School of Medicine, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Office of the Provost, and works to advance this goal both generally and for specific sponsored agreement opportunities as they arise. 3. Makes a fundamental contribution to research at Yale through the execution of robust processes and services that are notable for excellent customer service, efficiency, and responsiveness and for excellent training and professional development of staff. The SrAP- RA will actively partner with leaders across the University in developing strategies informed by accurate business intelligence and academic priorities to enhance research excellence. 4. Serve as the Institutional Official (IO) for the animal care and use and human research protection programs. The SrAP-RA will be a key leader of these programs in partnership with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the University's Institutional Review Boards. Be a strategic administrative partner for the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation and the Yale Cancer Center and their rapidly expanding clinical trials programs. 5. Encourage and maintain a culture of research compliance centered on fundamental ethical principles with an appropriate practical focus on education and guidance. Develop and maintain a sensible and practical risk-based approach to compliance with the regulations, policies, and laws that govern research activities. Through a data-driven analytic approach, develop ways to integrate compliance functions into operations and business processes to achieve efficiencies, reduce risks, improve compliance, and reduce administrative burdens for faculty and staff. The SrAP-RA and her/his staff will regularly review, draft, collaboratively communicate, and implement changes to university policies relating to research administration and compliance.



Required Skill/ability 1: Excellent interpersonal, management, writing, verbal communication and organizational skills.



Required Skill/ability 2: Effective human resource management skills; demonstrated success supervising staff and identifying and engaging resources in a complex, decentralized environment, including the ability to interact effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community. A demonstrated track record of career development for high-potential staff member.



Required Skill/ability 3: The ability to lead significant and meaningful change in a large, complex organization. Proven skills as a change agent. Demonstrated operational management expertise and knowledge of the research administration offices and related work processes for which she/he will be responsible.



Required Skill/ability 4: Extensive experience leading business-process improvement through a data driven analytic approach and familiarity with information systems implementation. Familiarity with electronic research administration systems and processes.



Required Skill/ability 5: Extensive track record of budget and financial management in a large, complex higher education research environment. Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies related to research compliance: protection of human participants, animal welfare, conflict of interest, intellectual property, research safety, research security and cost-accounting standards.



Preferred Education: Laboratory or translational research experience is a plus, but an overall understanding of the role of the research enterprise in a major research university is essential.



Work Week: Standard (M-F equal number of hours per day)

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Laboratory or translational research experience is a plus, but an overall understanding of the role of the research enterprise in a major research university is essential.

Bachelor's degree and 10 or more years of experience in a senior role in research administration in a major research program required. JD, MD, PhD or equivalent advanced degree strongly preferred.
